New development with Stella's staph (pics)

The good news is that the Baytril antibiotics seems to be working as her sores are scabbing over and flaking off (pleasant). However, over the weekend, these new "crop circles" started popping up. They start not too big and then expand out. The middle part is her pink belly skin but flakey. The outer edges are red and slightly 3D. They are also elsewhere on her body under her fur - they really look like crop circles.

I looked it up on the web and it said that staph can sometimes look like ringworm. Anyone seen this before ?

Poor Stella!

Raven's dad and brother were both prone to "hot spots". If I remember correctly they are staff, maybe same or similar to this. They have a distinct smell and if left alone without treatment, can ooze a very sticky secretion, which then mats the fur (long Rottie fur). So, we found what worked for them and would treat as soon as I'd see one develop. Clip/shave and clean with a betadine scrub and rinse, pat dry, and treat topically with a product at the time called Derma-Vet. Google that maybe. They would stop being sticky and start to dry out within a day or so and begin to heal.

When you go back to the vet, ask about that possibly. Also, I never treated with antibiotics. If she needs them and they are successful, that is great. But my fear in older dogs with lots of issues is that they can develop a resistence to the antibiotic when used often (as Stella and Betty have with all their issues), then it will cease to work so well. sad.gif

Let us know what the vet says!

Maverick has had this for a month now too

He has one on his belly and one on the top of his head. He was given the same antibiotics for 14 days and he also received a shot. Our vet also gave us some antifungal drops to put on it too just in case. The vet said this was a common thing given his age. He is almost 6 months old. He is looking much better now. The one on his head has gone away and the one on his belly is almost gone. I hope Stella will be feeling better soon.

Yes, it's also kind of smelly

She is being treated with antibiotics. Does this mean that we should be using an antifungal?

I'm taking her in tonight for a follow-up. Do you think I should have a culture done?

The antibiotics she's on right now, Baytril, seem to be working since the active sores on her back are now scabbing over and flaking off.

Have they explained to you at all why Blakely gets this? Is is an immune deficiency? Allergies? Old ages?

Thanks for the advice!

I have seen this before

with Blakely.... then these big huge things flake off!

Does she have the "smell"... that goes along with a yeast infection, too?

ketokonazole is good medication but can be hard on stomach

so you may ask the vet about giving some probiotics along with it, or adding some live-culture yogurt to the daily rations. Best wishes. happy.gif

My vet says

the smell is the yeast and he prescribes Ketakonazole (SP?) for that. It is an anti-fungal. He seems to think that ours is immune deficiency related, but due to her age, we have not allergy tested to rule that out.

I do know that when we were on kibble, she kept this ALL THE TIME...on the raw diet, it's much less frequent.
