Hey all, I posted a while ago about Tank's eye drooping a little and a potential infection. Neo Poly Dex was advised as a potential solution. Is there a risk to applying this without a vetinary consultation? The vet wants to charge me $60 just to look at him, and he is't bothered at all by it at the moment so i hesitate to bring him in.
Is it safe to just give it to him and watch to see if it works, and also, is there anyway to get the ointment without going to the vet to save the $60?
Thanks all!

as always, right on target!
eye meds
First of all--a "droopy" eye (I call it Bassett Hound eyes)
may be normal for Tank. Medication will not fix this, As far as an eye infection, what are the symptoms--excessive tearing, mucous discharge (and what color?) sensitivity to light? You really should know what you are giving and why before you self-treat. As to what you are giving I reccommend The Pill Book Guide to Medication for your dog and Cat (about $10 at Amazon.) Excellent. If you want a place to buy prescription drugs without the script email me. omegabulldogs@aol.com

A quick education re eye meds.
The Neo = neosporin = antibiotic
the Poly = polysporin = antibiotic
the Dex = dexamethasone = steroid
The basic difference between using NeoPolyDex and another medication like Gentocin or Terramycin or ophthalmic Erythromycin (sp?) is the steroid component. If there is an ulcer on the corneal surface of the eye then the steroid is NOT to be used because it will retard healing (and it will probably cause the eye to "burn"). If there's redness in the normally white of the eye, or some excessive redness/deep pink of the inner fold of the eyelids (probably seeing the 3rd eyelid exposed) then the steroid combo medication is okay to use...its the eyeball surface itself that we want to avoid use of a steroid.
Its not usually easy to see if there's a scratch or ulceration to the cornea so we owners look at symptoms: is dog squinting or holding eye partially open, is the eye tearing excessively, do you know if any specific injury or scratch to the eye? When in doubt, you can try using a small amount of NeoPolyDex one time and watch the dog's reaction. Keeping in mind that 1/4" ointment is about equal to one drop of liquid, and that some dogs will react to ANYTHING put into the eye, you shouldn't have concerns about trying this eye medication once. Please remember that not all human products are suitable for dog's eyes...and never use anything meant for the skin, in the eyes.
If your dog tolerates the first application of eye meds, you may want to continue for 2-3 days of 3xday application to evaluate if its been beneficial. HTH
