We adopted out a rescue and he had demodex, was started on Promeris and was on Canine Caviar lamb food, along ith medicated baths.
After negative skin scrapings he was adopted out- still on medciated baths and to be given Promeris 2-3 more times and one a month for the rest of his life.
For three days, the dog was fine. Owner had him on a lamb based food until his order fo TOTW came in...he has been on TOTW for a few weeks now. But after that third day the dog started going crazy itching himself until he was a bloody mess and got huge growths. So i went over and we took him to my rescue vet where the growths were aspirated and cultured. He had a nasty infection runing throuh his body along with yeast..and when i say nasty infection, were talking similar to MRSA but it was MRSI!
So he is on several medciations and is to be bathed once a week in medicated shampoo. But he is still going crazy itching his body until he bleeds all over...
so I am loking into possiblities..we checked the house for potetnial triggers- the only possiblity we found was Febreeze spray that is used in the home so we ditched that...
He only goes outside to potty so grass time is very limted- he prefer to be in the house laying on the floor next to his daddy!
So what about Promeris? Could it be the Promeris that is causing him to go mad ? I suggested that maybe we stop using it and see what happens. I know it will take a while to get it out of his system becasue it lasts for more than a month..but maybe worth a try.
And do you think Calm Coat would help him rigt now?
We have tried gold bond, powder, hydrocortisone sprays and creams, desitin..all which only comfort him for a couple of hours..then he is back to rubbing himself on the walls, couch using his legs to scratch his face etc..he is NOT COMFORTABLE!
Thanks for any help..

I know many dogs who did not do well on TOTW or fish based foods
go back to canine caviar if it was working

You know my experience with TOTW
I'd take him off that food.

demodex mange
i have a rescue who came to me with all her back hair gone, her open sores had almost healed all the way, and she still is going to get one more mitabahn dip if needed after this scraping. she eats natural balance fish and sweet potatoe and eats no grains for fear of yeast/infections. she still itches at times, but i usually rub her down with either bagbalm or triple antibiotic ointment i get from walmart. i believe the triple antibiotic does better at times. my vet said no grains, it will all flair up again. just my two cents.

TOTW produced allergies in my girl....
Since she has been off it she is doing quite well. I would say look at the food as the allergy cause....

We did discuss the use of pred but my vet
was concerned it could weaken his immune system and bring back on the demodex seeing that it had only been a month or so of being demodex free. he was adopted out with a huge bald area down his back etc..he really didnt even want them using the cortisone creams but something has to be done..

Would they be contraindicated in a dog getting over
demodex?

something struck me here
He cleans the comforter every few months...if the dog is sleeping on it and he's itchy, it should be washed weekly in hot water with a dye free, perfume free detergent. He could be allergic to dust mites like Hooch. He also needs to be vacuuming often in case it's allergies and try a portable air filter too.

Why isn't the vet prescribing some oral steroids to help
this dog thru this very rough time? Is it because of the severe infection? If you're using steroid sprays and creams and they are mildly effective, I question why more total relief is not being offered...and I'm talking short-term of 2-3 weeks maximum, along with antibiotics to knock down the infection.
I know little about specific food allergies but that is another place to examine, surely. Maybe the answer is a multi-pronged attack to his problem. Poor guy...not the best way to transition to a new home.

my answers
Maybe the mites are back?
we did a skin scraping to see if that was the case- no mites!
Could the dog have spit out the Promeris, so he's not getting the benefit?
Promeris is topical- applied on the skin.
Did the owner forget to give it?
owner has been giving it as suggested. Last time we applied it in more than one spot as well.
Could it be a reaction to TOTW?
MAYBE? bt he was itchy even on the lamb food he was feeing temporarilty..
Is he getting treats or food besides his dog food?
No treats- he does get a slice of cheese with his meds inside. And he was cooking orhim boiled chicken and bron rice because another vet told him to pu him a this diet...still no chancge..
How about the other "usual suspects"--washing anything the dog lies on in Tide, using scented fabric softener sheets, carpet cleaners, poison ivy or skin-irritating plants, any chemicals/fertilizers/pesticides he might encounter in another yard on a walk?
We went over all that. Yard isnt spayed with anything. They did have the carpets cleaned a few weeks prior to adoption...he did it himsl with a pet friendly cleaner that was suggested by the company. He sleeps with his owers in b his bed with him..checke detergent and they use that cheap Arm andHammer detergent but he said he doesnt wash the comforter but every few months..so not sure..

Canine Caviar doesn't have
Potatoes, TOTW does. Q gets itchy if he gets too much white potato. He's more tolerant of sweet potato.

My question remains...
if the dog is bleeding from extreme itching now, causing open infections, then why not add effective anti-itch medication along with antibiotics for the infection, to break the cycle. I fully accept that steroid use can compromise a weakened immune system but "CAN" isn't as real or immediate an issue IMHO as "NOW DEALING WITH".
