Have a question…on her sides you can see she is loosing her hair, and it has been around 5 months now. We had the vet check her out and he took blood. He said there is nothing wrong with her , that bull dogs do this sometimes. I thought it could be her thyroids , the vet said it checked out normal. He said it looks t be low in Amino-acids…so he has me feeding fish oil on her food. But it has not changed any. Have you seen this? If so, what can we do for her.??.....

This is what I found plus a lot more only no info on how to fix it...

Baldness: Many bulldogs go bald and the most common site for this is on the sides of the body. Often the baldness is symmetrical on both sides and the skin underneath blackens. The most likely cause is hormonal or seasonal alopecia, however it's worth asking the vet to test Thyroid function and for Cushings syndrome, especially in dogs that have recently put on a lot of weight as both of these condition will initially present as bald sides. Spayed bitches will sometimes go bald when they would have come into season and some dogs will only go bald during certain times of the year. In the absence of any other symptoms (ie: lack of appetite, lethargy or sudden weight gain) the problem is cosmetic.

My mom's Airdale had the same thing....

Loss of hair on both sides of the body with no explanantion from the vet.
As always, my mom attributed it to food. She was feeding him the same Nutra since he was a baby and ran into a financial hardship and had to change to a lower quality food. Within the time period is when he lost his hair on the sides.
She went back to his normal food within the month, but it took over 6 months for the hair to grow back in. She checked it everyday, and started to notice little hair bristles growing back. I tried calling her but she's unavailable at the moment. I wanted to give you more info before posting! Give me an hour, and hopefully I'll tell you more:)

Re: Natural sunlight is effective for treatment of SFA,

My Beulah has had this to the degree pictured for most of her life starting at about 18 mos. old. She's almost 9 now. Interestingly the hair grew back completely when she was pregnant twice--just coincidental? We tried just about every suggested remedy except for the topical horse ointments. She loves to sunbathe, so she gets plenty. Over the past two years it has grown back--sparsely at first, but more so now--just about completely, but all black hair and I can't say why. Several thyroid tests (Dr. Dodds included) enery level, appetite and temperament were always normal. In her case, it is not health related--it is purely cosmetic...she's still Beulahful though!
Her daughter is showing the same, but not as extensively (yet?). Buzi didn't start losing hair until she was 4 years old, and it didn't grow back when she was pregnant!
Good luck!
Love them Bulldogs!

Natural sunlight is effective for treatment of SFA,

and seasonal flank alopecia is most commonly seen during the winter months in colder climates...what part of the country is this dog living in? Cushings disease usually comes from continual/long-term use of steroids...is this dog on any steroids for a skin condition or other allergy-symptoms?

Someone told me they use

Eqyss shampoo on areas of "balding" or thinness and it helps regrow fur...anyone here tried this?

hair loss

Hi looks just like my prunella had, her thyroid tested it was fine also. my vet told me the same thing seasonal flank her sides got bald and very dark. sometimes it comes from lack of sunlight so i make sure if its not to hot to give her at least 2 hrs. daily and it has all grown back the new hair is a darker color but i'll settle for that over baldness! Good luck

have them get some MTG

my girl did the same thing and her thyroid checked fine. i started useing the MTG (main, tail, groom) from the tractor supply store and we had hair regrowth in 2 weeks time. and it completely filled in within a couple months. it is usually used on horses. one bad thing though,, it kind of smells like bacon grease...good luck!
