Natural Supplements for Torn ACL. Experience?

Hello All!

I was told by a non bulldog breeder to give Gunther 1000 mg of Vitamin C as well as Glucosamine.

Anyone who has experienced a bully with a torn ACL, have you tried this?

Any other thoughts?

Thanks
Jackie and Gunther

What we did is

try the rest for a few months. In our case he got better and did not need the surgery. I wanted to avoid it if at all possible and luckily we did. Every case is different. Even though it healed for now, he could still tear it again in the future, you never know.

Your vet will tell you if he needs it, or not - but I'd try resting first.

Just don't know what to do...

I agree that it will not completely heal on its own...I have my breeder and an associate suggest to us to not do the surgery if it can be helped. Crate Rest which we have not been doing because he is not an active dog right now. He is alone 9.5 hours during the day and he sleeps. At night, we play a little on the bed with him, then he sleeps more. I hope that equates close to crate rest. We have no other dogs in the house.

He seems to be in the most pain after waking up. I was hoping a supplement may help the healing. I agree it may never completely heal, and it upsets me. What if we can never take him for a walk again... Im just not sure what to do...

Thanks everyone..

Agree.

With a partial tear of a ligament, and imposed rest for many weeks and a bit of luck, the tear will repair but caution leads me to believe that once it has been damaged, that another injury is more likely to occur with strain/stress, whereas surgery to correct the tear and work around the injury by substitution should heal with cautious care for a couple weeks to complete freedom of movement and no limp, ie, resumption of normal activity. I know that surgery is scary to some, and the cost is high, but the results are most-always satisfactory.

Are you looking to "cure" it?

I believe there is some success in avoiding surgery if the injury is recognized immediately and strict rest is enforced for a couple of weeks but I doubt a supplement would "cure" the injury.

No experience with ACL problem but ...

Chester had surgery on his leg as a puppy for a dislocated radius (which was very successful, he barely limps at 2 1/2) and they said to give him 1200 mg of Ester C per day. We still give it to him, it has some kind of healing power.
