I see there are alot of conversations about this diagnosis, however, did anyone ever hear of a dog not being able to close it's mouth with this disease?
My friend's bulldog has not been able to close her mouth recently and the vet examined her today and said there is nothing like a growth keeping her from closing her mouth so he is unsure of what it is.
In the articles that I have read, it comes on as an autoimmune disease or even due to a parasite. This dog had three ticks on her head this past fall and afterwards there was a swelling above her eye where one of the tick was removed. I think this is what it might be.
Any ideas???
I would be surprised if dog wasn't on Pred...
even if its an inflammation of a cranial nerve that controls parts of the facial muscles/tongue movement the Pred would help in recovery. Meanwhile dog needs to be fed "mush" diet carefully syringed into the side of her mouth, slowly and in small amounts...water too...to keep her strength up, keep kidneys functioning well (espec. if steroids in use) and allow perhaps 1-2 weeks for the swelling to recede?? Scarey situation for sure. Have the skull x-rays been read by a 2nd opinion-vet?
Also, about Lymes
Lymes is very, very painful. My Mother had it twice and every joint in her body ached. I would think a dog with Lymes would have trouble walking.
Yes
The way I understand it, myositis can become so severe that the dog has trouble opening/closing the mouth. To me it seems if this was caused by a tick bite, all the joints would be affected and not just the jaw. I suggest giving the dog prednisone to treat the myo.
little more information
"She has some kind of neuropathy that is making her unable to close her jaw that is why she is drooling, the drinking is because her tongue does not curl properly making her try more for less water."
