I have a 6 month old bulldog named Oscar, me & my husband love him more than anything in the world! This past week I noticed around his right eye is very red. I have read some posts about tear stains & using desitin, but this is very close to his eye. Does anyone have any suggestions?? Our vet told us last month that he has entropian in both his eyes (his left is worse)& will most likely need surgery, but I am very nervous about it. Thanks!!
suffolk county vet?
has anyone had entropian surgery, that lives on long island & can suggest the vet they used (if they are happy) has anyone used the vmcli in west islip? i was thinking of getting a second opinion there since they have opthamologists...
yes do the surgery....
if your having eye problems now it will not get better....and tat problem can cause eye ulcers...and you do not want to deal with that..believe me i have been going thru it....have the eyes checked by a good eye doctor one who deals with this every day...you want to make sure their are no hairs growing under the eye lids....
take care of it now before it becomes a even worse problem...
good luck and keep us posted....even after you see the eye doctor..let us know what they say....
thank you
i was actually going to contact a vet opthamologist for a second opinion.
thanks for the advice
Re: this is my first post!!!
If it is red around his eye, but he isn't squinting or tearing it could be demodex. He is at the age it might show up.
PS>
If you are unsure about the necessity for entropion surgery, and think that (1)the problem isn't severe enough to warrant it, or that this tearing could be from something else like Distichia (only hairs growing inward, and not the eyelid itself rolling inward) then invest the $40 or $50 and get another opinion from another experienced vet (not in the same office). Anytime you are contemplating surgery for your dog and you are unsure, get a second opinion. Its worth the "peace of mind".
Do the corrective surgery.
Its not only irritating the eye, causing excessive tearing (and eventual fungal infection on his face from the constant wetness) but the rubbing eyelashes can cause ulceration which can do one or both of these damaging results: reduce his vision from repeated small scratches on the front of the eye (cornea) much like you looking through smudges lenses in your eyeglasses, or cause ulcers to form on the eye which if they go untreated, will cause the dog to go blind (wear a hole in the eye).
Be sure you are using a vet that you have confidence in, in doing the anesthesia, and make sure you ask lots of questions about the procedure, what needs to be done afterward for good healing results, and of course, the cost. Would he need just the upper eyelids done, or all four? Does he have any ulcers in place now, and if so, will they be treated with medication before the surgery, or afterward, and is that included in the cost total you have received? Remember our cautions: NO acepromazine to be used as sedative, AND ONLY isoflurene or sevoflurene gas as the anesthetic (no injectible anesthetics). Also ask them to note on his record what size trachea tube is used for the surgery (reference that info later). If he's 6mos and having this problem now, he probably won't outgrow the need for corrective surgery. Good luck.
Re: this is my first post!!!
you can try putting some antibotic cream like polysporin , it might help, he is a little young , wait a while brfore you have his surgery it might get better, or so I have heard
