THis is the third bout of it we have had in the last 6-7 months. Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? We recently moved to Hawaii so I'm pretty sure it is environmental, but I can not figure out what it could be. Any ideas would be much appreciated!!!! Also, is there any long term side effects caused by simplicef? That is the antibiotic that the vet prescribes for Dread, and I am hesitant to keep giving him medication. Will folliculitis go away on its own? I have a medicated shampoo that we use so I was hoping that would do the trick. Thanks!!!

We are on Oahu
Thank you Elaine! We chose our particular vet because he was on the list here and the office is right down the street from my work and Dreadnought's day care place. We are thinking about a switch, though. I just don't get warm fuzzies from the vet we have now, although my husband likes the vet fine.
What island are you on?
we loved Dr Francis Kamiya on Oahu when we were there several years ago. He was Junior's vet.

I really liked Dr Kamiya..
he was recommended to me by the bulldog club members I met while there. His office was always full of waiting bulldogs. I remember calling him in the middle of the night when Junior was just a puppy and he had a runny nose. Dr Kamiya called me back!

first i would consider....
the problem your aving as a low immunity problem....many yeast and skin problems point to immunity and over vaccines....i would try to start boosting the immune with vit c....cod liver tabs...i would also consider the food a casue of the problem...by giving antibotics your masking the under lining cause and not getting to the root casue of why your having this problem....yes i am a raw feeder and a health nut...
also in homeopathy skin problems often are a result of poor indoor air quality....i use two air cleaners and only smoke out doors or near a open window....
i hope this helped a little bit....
i have....
to run out i did not have time to check the computer today...i will not be back till monday....but i will look up some things....i know their are a couple of really good herbs.....
and one thing....that can cause hair loss...cheap stainless steel bowls!!!!!! double check yours....i was shocked when my holistic vet told me that....
will check back monday....
i'm going thru the same thing.
he's on an antibiotic and interceptor and capstar and it gone for about a few weeks, but just this past day, he got those red bumps again. I think mine may be resistant to the medications so will ask the vet on monday. I have used pyoben and hexadene so his skin won't be too dry.
Judy...
OK, that is what I am questioning. I hate to keep giving him meds. I want to get to the root of the problem. We feed Royal Canin and have never had a problem. He also gets gloucosomine (sp) and fish oil caps (derm caps). Where would I get vitamin c? We're not ready to go down the raw foods path yet but would be willing to try a new food. Although, if it was his food, wouldn't the skin condition be something we fight ALL the time? He is just getting bouts of it every several months. I'm not a huge fan of our vet either which doesn't help. THanks for your help and I would love to hear your other ideas.
Thanks!!!
Glad to hear that the antibiotic is safe. We are going to try the shampoo tonight and hopefully that will knock it out without the antibiotic. It is a really small spot so I'm hoping this will work. Do I need the antibiotic???? I don't mind getting the antibiotic, but I hate to give him medicine if we can take care of the "funk" topically.
Simplicef is safe...
But I would ask about changing up the antibiotics each time so Dread doesn't develop a resistance to it. Not sure if that can happen, but when I had Isabella my vet changed meds each time she got a URI. He didn't want her to become resistant to the Simplicef, so he rotated meds with her:-)

Same idea...
The Dermabenss contains 2.5% of the ben-peroxide, the Pyoben contains 3% but they are designed to treat the same type of skin conditions, so this dog owner has two recommendations on how to approach her problem.
well, i'm not an expert but...
i have a suggestion. you can ask your vet about a shampoo called dermabenss. i used it on my dog when he had a hot spot & it was awesome. it is for a lot of different skin/hair irritations & the main ingredient is benzoyl peroxide. you can read about it at dermapet.com. hope this helps! good luck!
Is the shampoo Pyoben?
That is a product designed to "open" the hair follicules and is often prescribed together with antibiotics for a staph skin problem. When using the shampoo weekly (or 2xwk) are you leaving the suds on the dog for 10mins to allow the medication factor to work before copious rinsing??
