My 10 year old has Coccidia!

From my understanding this is usually found in pups. Has anyone else had this with their adult dog? He was prescribed both albon and flagyl. What is the prognosis???? My poor guy has been vomiting, had watery stools, and his appetite is poor at the moment. Need some moral support out there.

Coccidia in adult dog related to low immune system

Hi - Yes, your are right about this hitting pups more often.
I wonder if you 10 year old has a low immune system? May need a little help from supplements?
here are some good ones to try:

Ester C ( 500mg ) 1 per day - for a few months (VERY safe )

Vitamin E ( 100 IU) 1 per day - for a few months .....

YOu may also want to consider a Good GRAIN -Free dog food; Innova EVO - Wellness CORE - Merrick Before grain ----- do a 50:50 mix of your food and the new food - Never change too quick or you will see more loose stools.

Let me know if you need more help?

I live in an apartment complex

so we do not have a yard. There are lots of dogs in my neighborhood is Los Angeles. I will make a conscious effort to wipe down his feet whenever we come back inside. Is there anything else I can do to prevent this from happening again?

I had dogs bring it home from

a Dog show!! That's right folks! The albon and flagyl I agree should help.

Another thing you may try is pedialyte. You can give it to him as is...or even freeze them into ice cubes, if he will eat them that way. My concern is ....he is a 10 year old, and they don't bounce back like a pup or a younger dog would, so I suppose I would be extra aggressive where replacement of fluids and electrolytes were concerned, to avoid dehydration.

Good Luck!~

I agree also but you also have to treat your yard where the dog

can live in the ground and reinfect your dog when he walks there then licks his paws. Using a watering can(2 gallon gARDEN SIZE) put 1 pint (2 cups) of Clorox in it and fill with water then walk all around the yard spraying everywhere the dog can walk with it. I also avoid dog parks with my guys because of these different parasites that can live in the ground.

Re: Thank you both!

That is good that he is drinking water. I am sure his appetite will come back. The chicken and rice is nice and bland and the meds will start to kick in too. Just keep a lose eye on him and as long as you see improvement that is a good thing. I know it is scary when they get sick like this and are older. I wish you and your baby all the best and that he improves really soon.

Also be sure to recheck a stool sample when meds are

finished.. Coccidia is becoming resist and I know people and vets who have had to double the dose of medication. Also Iggy past works great for runny poo poo :O)

Thank you both!

I am keeping a close eye on him. He was just diagnosed today. He's been drinking water, but his appetite is not great. So far today he is keeping down some boiled chix and boiled beef with some rice. Vet also did a complete blood panel since it's been a year and I will have results tomorrow. Thanks again for your prompt responses.

Agree, hydration and good supportive care

Keep him calm, feed several small meals of bland food, take him out to pee/poop often so he won't have accidents in the house and feel embarassed, and make sure he's taking in fluids. You can add some moisture to his food (like a stew) but he should be encouraged to drink every 2-3 hrs if he's not doing that now. Do you know how to do a quick check for hydration? Go to a part of the body where there isn't a lot of fat or muscle, perhaps the forehead or between the ears, and "pinch" the skin...then watch how long it takes for the skin to relax back into normal position...should not take more than 2-3 seconds. If its sluggish, or not dropping at all, he needs IV fluids! This may necessitate taking him into the clinic for 30mins each morning to receive sq fluid bolus which will be slowly absorbed during the day...and fluids directly intraveniously if he's seriously dehydrated. happy.gif

Re: My 10 year old has Coccidia!

Coccidia is not limited to puppies. It is a very contagious illness. The meds you are on should help but the main thing is the dog does not get dehydrated, that can be very serious. Not sure how long this has been going on, but if he is still vomiting and not keeping any water down he may need to have IV fluids to keep him from getting dehydrated. I would contact your vet and give them an update on how the dog is doing. and I would cook a bland diet to help settle his stomach for a few days, hamburger and rice usually is good, or cooked chicken and rice. Give that for a few days and gradually add the regular food back in. Give a few smaller meals during the day rather then larger ones so as not to upset his tummy.
