More Raw Questions ...

Hello,

My boy Hurley is on his 4th week of eating raw and I'm still trying to get his stools to be consistently firm. He had his first completely firm stool since being on raw about 2 weeks ago, but since then it's been hit or miss (it's never diarrhea though). I've only been feeding bone-in chicken breast that I grind myself. At first I fed approximately 90% meat and 10% bone, but in an effort to firm things up I started leaving the bones in all the breast that I grind which I believe kicks the bone content up to about 20%. He also had horrendous gas, so started removing the chicken skins and giving probiotics with every meal. All of this has helped firm him up some and almost completely gotten rid of his gas, but I still don't think his stools are as firm as they should be.

Should I add even more bone until he firms up? At what point do I reduced bone down to around 10%? I'm assuming I would do this gradually? Should I not introduce another meat to his diet until his stool is consistently firm?

Thank you so much for your help!

Re: always remove the skin from your chicken....

Hi Judy,

Thanks for your response. The chicken that I buy has 75 mg of sodium per 4 oz. serving, so I don't think that's the problem. I think I'll try the pork and egg as you mentioned and I was also thinking of reducing his meal size a little. Too much food can also cause lose stool, right?

Part of me thinks that it really isn't that big a deal if he doesn't have perfectly firm stool. I just know that his stool is the an important indicator that his diet is appropriate. Thanks again.

always remove the skin from your chicken....

untill your well on your way with raw diet.....increase your bone is ok....but dont over do it to much....if they start turning white coming out of him you have to much bone....crush some egg shells thats great calcium also....
double check your chicken are you sure its not enhanced??? soduim added or any flavoring?? double check this...
'if in a week he is still having loose poop go to pork for a protein...and see if this helps....

Grinder

Hi Jen,

Thanks for your feedback. I've posted a link to the grinder that I have below. It came highly recommended as a very good grinder for the price and so far it's worked great for me. I've only ground bone-in chicken breast, but it handles those with no problems at all. Also, from what I understand grinding chicken bones won't void the warranty as is the case with other grinders at this price point. Thanks again.

from what I've read on other lists.....

dogs can get the runs from too much fat, too many different proteins too fast, etc...so I'd stick with one protein and not increase bone....but others who have fed raw a LOT longer than I, I'm sure will chime in with more advice

by the way - what kind of grinder do you have? I'd like to get something new and be able to grind chicken breast, etc..

thanks and good luck - usually you see problems the other way with too much bone and no poos
