Moe

A week ago tomorrow, we lost our little boy. Moe had struggled with a small, tight trachea, heart murmur grade 4/5 and seizure activity. Moe was on pheno, then potassium bromide and then a combination of both. Recently, due to no seizure activity and a bad reaction to both pheno and the potassium bromide he was on natural stress tabs. He was doing well, no clue that anything was wrong. On Tuesday morning we woke at 4:00 AM to take my husband in for cardiac surgery. We went to let our three bullies out to potty and found Moe dead in his crate. It was chaos and with a broken heart I bundled our baby and left him. My husbands surgery was at a hospital and hour and a half away. It was a nightmare and i still question everything. Moe had a great day and night, I had no clue it would be our last. We spoke to our Vet and he feels that Moe had some type of arythmia during the night and simply died in his sleep. Have any of you experienced anything like this? I'm at a loss as to what I may or may not have missed. I do know I miss my little buddy and feel that in some way I may have let him down.

I'm so very sorry...

You and your little Moe will be in my thoughts..

Always in my heart...

sooo sorry to hear of your loss..

sounds like he died peacefully in his sleep
personally I hope that bullies go that way too when their time comes..
there is not likely anything else you could have done for him..
sorry to hear of your loss

Shared sadness at your loss.

No, I don't think you missed anything in particular...his little body just wore out, and both he and you were fortunate to lose him "in his sleep". I'm sure you can, after a while, step back and remember much happier times. Hugs.

Cathy,

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I know what it's like to lose a pet so my heart goes out to you during this sad time. On another note, I hope your husband is recovering well from his surgery.

Sorry for your loss

Cathy I know how you are feeling we lost Rocky 3 weeks ago today. I have wondered the same things you are wondering. But just know you did everthing you could and then some for him. Don't second guess yourself. I have been there and done that. God called him home and you will be together again one day.

Try to remember the good times you had with him. This all takes time and give yourself the time to work through this.

Moe

Thank you for your kind words, and I truly appreciate your insight and knoweledge regarding Moe. It's odd, because we purchased Moe with the intent to breed him, but never did because we were afraid there may be underlying health issues and did not want these things to be passed along. He was never neutered because of his very narrow traecha and seizure history. We were extremely watchful of our females when they were in season. Our bullies have enough problems without indiscriminate people adding to the problem. We had him for four wonderful years and he was our joyful little boy. At least we got to live and love the wonders of him while he was here, and in that we were blessed.

So sorry for your loss of Moe

What you describe isn't rare. My friend lost her 5 year old girl that same way. The dog had no known history of heart issues, only from a necropsy did they find out she had an underlying heart problem.
Much the same thing happened to 2 another 2-4 year old males I know of - they had a normal day, were put into their crates for the night and found dead the next morning. One had a necropsy done that was inconclusive, don't know if the other had one done.

Let me get onto my soapbox for a moment now - When this type of early death occurs it illustrates the need for breeders to have their dogs tested for heart issues (and other known breed related problems) BEFORE the dogs are bred and to not breed those with problems that can be passed onto their offspring. Testing and selective breedings are the way to lessen the occurrences of health problems in our dogs. Pet people deserve a healthy dog that will live to a ripe old age too.
