Lola has "extremely high amount of crystals" in her urine we are going to get her kidney's

X-rayed tomorrow, I'm worried, the Vet gave us Baytril and prescription food. If she has a kidney stone she'll need surgery, how do they remove stones? And is it a big incision? He said she will need to be on prescription food for the rest of her life! The quality of the ingredients of these food worry me. He said she can not eat any other foods, I am so sad for her, she just loves her green beans and hard boiled eggs! I tried to use the search option for more info nut it's not working. If anyone is available I would love any info or advice. The vet mentioned strivite or something like that. I would love any info, i'm sorry for any typo's I'm posting from an iPhone

Thanks I used Orijen without any issues also, changed to NB to s

Big mistake, after we're done with this month of prescription I am definitely going to change her food. I'm glad your boy outgrew the crystal problem, have a great day! Evelyn

sorry re: the above

my boy had an abundance of calcium oxalate crystals at 8 mos, a UTI and was put on the dreaded prescription food. I hated that too. He continued to have the crystals for a few months then none. At 2 yrs of age my vet said he probably has outgrown it, and now he has been on Orijen for a few months. No problems so far.

Lola update she had her bladder x-rayed and it turns out

There aren't any stones in her bladder, I feel so silly I thought she had stones in her kidneys LOL anyways the Vet said we need to keep her on this prescription diet and that I should bring in another sample of her urine in ten days! I am so very happy that she doesn't need surgery, now I just have to research what food to feed after all this is over, thanks for the well wishes and may you all have.a wonderful day. Hello Kim thanks for the well wishes, I realized she had a probl

Because of the odor of her urine, it smelled fishy, so I took a urine sample in to the vet. Thanks again and have a woderful day!

Thank you, that is comforting, she is such a little beggar..

The vet did say she can still have her favorite hard boiled eggs. We just got back from the vet, thankfully the x-Ray didn'tt reveal any stones so she won't need surgery. I am so grateful and I am going to research cooking her meals after all this is over, thank you for the suggestions she sure loves apples too! It's good to know that she won't be deprived forever, thanks again and best wishes, Evelyn

Sorry to hear about this. Hope Stella does well on her new diet. How did you realize there was a problem...?

Thanks, he did say she would have to be on prescription food for

And I guess that I'll have to resign myself to that, I mean I'll do whatever I have to for her to be well, but it's so hard to think I won't be able to give her another egg or green bean, makes me so sad for her! Thanks for the info

Q had problems with struvite crystals

His was pH dependant. Whenever the urine pH would go up, crystals would form. I had Q on Methioform tabs and his regular food to get the pH down (also, Vit C tabs).
Q's pH got whacky from prostatitis (obviously not Lola's problem) and resolved when I had him neutered. I would talk to your vet about your concerns about the diet. Some dogs with bladder stones (different types) do go on special diest for the rest of their lives, and do quite well on them.

Oh thank you, I hate to put her through another surgery

This will be her sixth if she needs one, it makes me hopeful to think of the possibility of her passing them without surgery. The vet said something about her being on this particular food for one month, to lower her PH and then a different food. I will definitely update you tomorrow on what the x-Ray reveals, thanks for your info, Evelyn

Yes he had the

surgery three weeks ago. His stones were in his bladder and they made in an incision there and flushed it out as he had many many stones. He was sore and miserable for three days but he's like a new dog now. It's better for a girl as there isn't as much chance of a blockage if a stone passes so maybe she wont' need surgery. It can be dangerous for a boy to get blocked by a stone so that's why I decided to do the surgery. You really need to find out what the make up of the crystals are, so respond really well to a food change. You can also subscribe to the kidney list on yahoo that Sue/Bear turned me onto. They have a lot of good advice as well. Let us know how the x-ray goes.

Hi Kelly, we go tomorrw for an x-Ray I guess I'll know more then

But I can't stand the thought of feeding her these foods for the rest of her life, so your baby already had surgery? I hope he's well, how did they get the stones out, I have a girl, I wonder if it's different for girls. I'm trying to do some research on my iPhone but it's a slow process, thanks for responding, I think I am going to research cooking for her, when I get access to a computer, hope your boy stays well, Evelyn

struvite, diet and vedges

My old boy Lucky had struvite too. He was on Hills Prescription Diet s/d for six weeks, then for the rest of his life on C/D.

We had a dietadvice from a holistic vet, to get a clear view of what is possible and what not. So Lucky stayed on this prescription diet C/D with Vit C. tablets but could have his vedgetables and fruit. Once a week a piece of haring was allowed.

In fact I trained Lucky for obedience and used apple for that. It turned out it really worked fine, because you can use big piece of apple to trow, which is a big turn on for a lot of dogs during training.
Every now and again he got a small piece of meat, and he would really love that.

Don't worry to much about it, Lucky adjusted fine. He even stopped begging for treat with certain people in the park (who would always hand him a cookie). He loved the hugs instead!

Ineke and Zorro

I'm having a similar issue

My bulldog just had surgery for bladder stones (ammonium acid urate) and we'll be checking in three months to see if more crystals have formed. The vet put him on Purina NF and the ingredients are horrible. I submitted all my dogs info to a top holistic vet and asked them to tell me what to feed the dog. I may have to home cook but I don't care because I can't bring myself to feed him that food. There are always other options, if you would like to know who I'm using to do this you can feel free to email me.
