Large Boil or Mass on chest..

I just noticed a large mass on Gunther's chest. It may be a pimple, or a boil, I'm not sure. It feels like it is in the skin and not attached to the muscle. It may of gotten a touch bigger or harder than it was a few days ago.

Any idea what this may be? Should I take him to the vet, or try something at home first? My first instinct is it's a large pimple or boil. When I separate the fur to try to look at it, I don't see much. Not much of a change in colour or anything, so I am just not sure.

Any advice would be appreciated!

You're Welcome

I will keep you guys in my thoughts and prayers. I learned early on not to mess with any lumps or bumps. You just never know. Best of luck with your dog and please keep us posted on how he is doing.
Only good thoughts coming your way.

Thanks Kathy

I hope that if it is canerous, it's a low grade....I still can't believe this. I've had lots of cancer in my family. Didn't think we'd have to worry about our baby!!

Jackie, I am new to this board and I just found your blog a few days ago. I love the support here (and how it helped you make the decision to get Gunther to the vet). Everybody here is a wealth of information... love it!
Hope all is well for Gunther. Please keep us posted (and I'll be checkin' your blog too!)

Lipnomas are very common in dogs.. our one lab mix growing up had 10 or more of them by the time he was 15. I would get it checked out, but with any luck, this is the problem..

Re: Large Boil or Mass on chest..

Having dealt with this kind of thing in the past, my opinion is any large lump or bump needs to be seen by the vet. Only they can tell you what it is. It may not be anything but I would never allow any type of mass to be unchecked. I would take him in as soon as you can especially if you are saying it is getting bigger. If it is nothing, then that is great, but if it should be something serious, then you want to get it taken care of as soon as possible. If it is nothing the vet can tell you just keep an eye on it. With out physically seeing it and feeling it, no one can tell you what it can possibly be. I had a male that developed what I thought was a cyst, it was not attached to anything and I could grab it on all sides. I took him in and it turned out to be a blood vessel tumor and it needed to be removed. I am glad I did not wait. So with that said I would err on the side of caution.

Re: Went to the Vet.....Mast Cell Tumour

I pray it is not cancer too. It is a good thing you decided to get your dog to the vet right away.

Went to the Vet.....Mast Cell Tumour

Well, we went to the vet tonight and the vet said it was a Mast Cell Tumour. He is getting it removed on Tuesday. He checked a sample under the microscope and thought it was abnormal and raised red flags. He said he doesn't know if it is cancerous or not, but the mass will be sent to the pathologist aftwerwards for examination. Oh man...we really pray this is not cancer... sad.gif

Jackie, we just went through this last week with Ollie...

he had a wartlike thing on his neck and the vet took it off and pathology showed a mast cell tumor, low grade and not very aggressive cancer. He took a lot off to make sure the margins were clean and he said Ollie should be fine. If you catch them early and remove them, it shouldn't be a problem in the future. But keep looking for new ones, Ollie will get a going over every week from now on.
