kibby has eye issues now

Dear all,

so i went out of town for a couple of weeks and came back and noticed that my almost 6 yo kibby's eyes were a little red... not red on the actual eyeball but the surrounding meat around the eyes, not swollen or anything. I just figured she didnt have good sleep while i was gone.

she had a squinting problem on her left eye for a little while b4 i left and the vet said it could be just a little entropian, that seemed to go away..this is b4 i went out of town. he didnt seem to worry about it so i didnt either.

then her eyes recently started watering a little more then usual, like more clear tear stains to clean, so i didnt worry too much...this was last week

now her eyes are not watering as much and it seems to have turned into a goopy white/clear slime that is in there every morning or everytime she wakes up... sometimes its not in the corner either, its like across her eyeball so i have to take it out, this is this past week.

so after doing a search on here about this, i figure maybe its allergies? i have never had allergies before, so is this the season already in norcal? Also, she does seem a little more congested and did hock up a lugi this morning, clear and white. maybe an upper respritory lung infection then?

kibby is currently on ciproflaxin to clear up her bladder infection.. doc gave us these new antibiotics because her usual ones weren't doing the trick... so would this help if she had some type of lung infection too?

i have some neo-poly-bac that i never used on her before but we got it when her eyes were red a year ago from the vet... her eyes cleared up before we even opened the box! should i use this?

so can i wait a week to bring her back to the vet, i have to bring another urine sample anyways when she is done with her pills...or do these symptoms seem more serious?

should i just get the refresh gel and try that on her eyes first? i have some allergy clear eyes drops as well... or what brand of liquid drop i should use after the refresh gel?

these new antibiotics are not clearing up her congestion/plegminess like her old ones (cephlaxin?) ... should i be worried?

sorry to ramble... thanks for any help! happy.gif

Refresh Liquigel works very well and was prescribed by an old Bu

eyes if not too bad

First of all, use artificial tears as many times as needed

to dilute the greyish goopy stuff, wiping afterward and then put one last drop in the eye so you leave it "moist" without being over-flooded. You should be doing that each morning and evening, and midday too if needed. Then after a few minutes of clear shiny eyes, you can put in some (about 1/4inch strip) of the NeoPolyDex ointment. Natural blinking action will distribute the medication...do this 2xday to a "clean" eye. IF she blinks alot after the application of the medication and holds this eye partially closed, then its causing irritation and I would stop using the NeoPolyDex...and she may need pure antibiotics without the steroid component...and that would signal some ulceration. For now, I'd do the above treatment and have the vet recheck her eyes when you return to him/her next week to recheck her other problem. happy.gif

Allergies don't have a particular season, however

we see most of the eye irritation in the Spring when the pollen is blowing through the air and everything is blooming...its a little early for that now unless you are in a very warm climate. Dryness can come from having heat on in your home and some who live in colder climates use a humidifier during the winter months to avoid this dryness (for human and animal comfort). As to the brand of artificial tears (not lens solution used for contact wearers!) there are many good ones and GenTeal is one that I like, but anything that says "artificial tears" is okay...avoid products that say they 'get the red out' because they cause vein constriction and that's not what you want. Some prefer the 'gel' rather than the drops because the slightly thicker solution may stay in the eye longer but the choice is yours and the difference is minimal IMO.
