Dear all,
I just happen to be on line last night searching for some good glucosomine for my 5 year old kibby and my 12 year old gabby... when i came across some synogi soft chews and other items, I noticed that many were cheaper or out of stock... after some further research I found out that TEVA animal products aka dvm phamaceuticals, makers of malaseb, optic ear, and a bunch of other stuff got shut down by the FDA back in July 2009 for quality control issues... see article
http://news.vin.com/VINNews.aspx?articleId=13539
there hasn't been a recall on anything yet, but just a warning out there in case you didn't know.
Anyways, I was thinking to use the human glucosomine, unless anyone else had any other suggestions out there for allergy prone dogs... Those synogi soft chews seem to be great since they have other vitamins and things in there, but I am wary of the product until the FDA reopens the factory.
Can anyone else reccommend a good supplement? I feed my dogs natures variety salmon/brown rice kibble and wellness wet. wellness senior dry kibble seem to be giving my old lady dog hot spots.
And if I choose the human one, I have noticed that the pills/capsules come in 1500mllg or whatever, should I break it up into 3 portions so each dog only gets about 500mlg per day? thanks!
Every dog is different...
Your's may do quite well on the human stuff. I don't think it'll hurt to try - especially since you have her on a fish protein diet.
As for the NuVet, it does contain chicken liver. Q doesn't tolerate chicken (he gets a greasy coat and staph infections), but he's been find with the NuVet. Maybe 'cause it's such a small amount? Dunno... My reasoning was to try to keep their immune systems in tip top shape. I also give probiotics for that same reason.
Sorry I'm not more help. I know how frustrating it is to deal with all these issues!

now I'm wondering if I should wait
to start Audrey on it because most of the dog stuff is flavored. I really like the Fosters and Smith stuff for my old girls. It made a huge difference immediately, but it's definitely got flavoring and Audrey doesn't need that level of joint care yet. She takes a NuVet supplement every day, should I eliminate that too for a bit?

If the dog is asymptomatic
I use the human stuff. However, my rottie (who has severe arthritis) does better on NuJoint Plus. I'm not sure why since the human stuff I use has the same ingredients (glucosamine, chondroitin, and MSM). I give Q the human stuff, and Kano gets the NuJoint. I also give them both NuVet vitamins. Kano eats the NV Instinct with the raw chicken medallions. Q is on TOTW Pacific Stream and raw fish (sushi! lol).

She's not there yet
I was actually surprised when the vet said she had severe arthritis. She doesn't move like she has arthritis (still hops around and runs like an idiot). Some mornings, she's à bit stiff, but she loosens up quickly. For now, I just have to make sure she doesn't overdo. I'm keeping the adequan in mind, though!

Hey Olivia
Have you ever tried Kano on Adequan for her arthritis? It's been great for Morgan's hip dysplasia.
thanks, I didn't want to overdose them! n/m
I use 1,500 mg glucosomine
nm
what is the maximum of glucosamine?

The cheap store brand glucosomine is ok to give
My Vet said to just make sure it contains at least
500 mg of chondroitin.
Vitamins
We know about DVM, everyone is in Malaseb withdrawls!!!! Please come back soon!!!!
As for glucosamine/chondroiton we give the human ones, I think they are 1500 mg. Deuce gets one whole pill a day divided into breakfast and dinner. Oliver only gets half of one because he is 8 months old, although I could probably give him a whole one.
I am looking too
I usually use Drs Foster and Smith, but I am looking at what else is available. There joint care 3 works really well for my old girls, and Iam thinking I am just going to get the JC1 or 2 for Audrey.
