The vet should (did) run a blood panel to be sure the liver was functioning normally when I started both my older bitches on this medication for arthritis (about age of 7yrs) and while I used it only during the damp/winter months initially, I was soon using it yearround. Dale is 12.5yrs and has been on it daily for at least 4yrs, probably longer than that. She is about 60lbs and she takes one 50mg dose daily, with her last meal. One thing should be noted; this medication addresses pain relief as well as inflammation reduction. Some medications may address one of these needs, but not both, so be sure you know what you're giving and what its intended to provide. If your dog is not taking well to this drug, you should see some reaction in 1-2 days.

I had Kano (over 9 years) on Rimadyl then had to start pred. We did check her liver panel before starting the Rimadyl, and I had her on maximum pepcid and sucarafate. We waited 5 days off rimadyl before starting the pred (she's in the throes of a lupus episode, so we had to get it going ASAP). I'm still watching her like a hawk and continued the sucarafate and pepcid.

I'm sure not every dog can do well with this, but mine have.
