Hyperplastic Trachea

Hello,
I am new to this forum and thought I get perhaps some answers here.
We got a 9 week old english bulldog that we got from a good breeder in OK. 3 Days after we got him he started getting sick, so we took him to the vet. He got an xray and was diagnosed with a hyperplastic Trachea-when I saw the x ray it floored me how tiny his trachea was......now he has an awful upper respt. infection that he can't get rid off. After much consideration we decided to exchange the puppy with a healthy puppy after we spoke with the breeder and she agreed to exchange the puppy.........now we are waiting to hear from our breeder because we do not know if she wants us to send the puppy back or put him down-how awful of a thought even:-(................he is so adoreable and we are so attachted to him already....he is on heavy antibiotics and under vet's care.

We have 1 english bulldog from the same breeder and he is healthy. The new one we got from a family member from our previous breeder that we really did not know, really this puppy was just born this way so it is noones fault.

Has anyone in here dealt with such a thing and had a good outcome? What is your thought on us returning him for another puppy?

We are just lost right now...............and looking for answers!

the things i watch closely.....

humidity effects him more than the heat.....so if its a real humid day i keep him in.....he can easily aspirates his food causing pneumonia.... so i went to raw and have not had any problems.....i watch is drinking....so i got him a drinking fountain...i never let anyone pick him up with their arm under his neck...i have given the vets and vet techs a lesson on how to carry him and they respecate that....
pneumomia and aspirating are the two big things with hypolastic trechea....his treachea is as big as a reg size straw which is small.....their are others who have had worse problems than me....
also i have a epi pen for allergies,,,,,because his throat closes up so fast,,,,,i almost lost him once.....
he is 2 doing well....he weighs 52 lbs...goes out and plays with charlie....
but it is always somthing to keep in the mind....not to let him over heat....i have not had to have surgery but as the vet says that could be a big risk....tubes cause irritation and could irratate his trechea causing swelling...
would i give him up no....do i feel the breeder owes me a refund yes....but that is a whole other grip.....
talk with your vet a bulldog vet ..... is he going to have trouble eating....are their other factors involved...

wilson has a hypoplastic trechea.....

he got aspirated pneumonia and thats when we found it...took 5 months to clear te pneumonia....he is now two years old.....the only precaution is if we ever had to put him under...also he has bad allergies...i have a epi pen in case as his throat closes up fast....once he had stopped breathing by the time i got him to te vet....
yes you do have to take a little extra precaution....but he is healthy other wise....

Re: If you want to trade the pup, do it soon...

The breeder said she has to make arrangements for the puppy to return. We want it fast as well because the longer we wait the harder it will be for us and the puppy. We just confused to why it is taking so long to make these arrangements so we are going to get some answers today. Thank you for your advise.

Was he shipped to you by plane?

when you received him? Did he come cargo or did you go pick him up and take him in the cabin with you.

If you want to trade the pup, do it soon...

the longer you wait, the harder it will be to give up the first one! I don't want to sound 'hard' but its the breeders decision whether or not to put the first puppy down, or keep it, and you might feel better not knowing the answer. But I can tell you from many years of group discussions, people find it hard to impossible to give a puppy back after they have it for several weeks, so decide quickly and make the trade ASAP. PS>vet bills are racking up...who will be paying for these???

Re: Did you see a "cloudy" area on the xrays?

wow that is wonderful...no there was nothing cloudy about it....it was extremely clear on the xray. We taking him to a vet that has dealt with bullies all his life-our vet now has seen bullies however the other one seems to maybe have more knowledge .....we just want to make sure we doing the right thing.

Re: terminology

yes lol sorry it was a mispell!!

terminology

are you sure of the term "hyperplastic trachea" ??
I would assume it should be "hypoplastic" meaning smaller, underdeveloped.

Did you see a "cloudy" area on the xrays?

Usually, the URI will show up as a cloudy area on the films. This can distort the xray to some degree. My advice is to treat the URI and take more xrays when he is well. I think you would be wasting your money at this point to get a second opinion.

I had a puppy a few years ago who was diagnosed with a small trachea. He also had a URI at the time the xrays were made. He was a very good breather and was growing and thriving so it didn't make any sense to me that he had a very small trachea. He got over the URI and never had another problem. He was 100% healthy.

Re: Hyperplastic trachea

thank you so much for your input-you are correct in what you are saying.....we told the breeder to please NOT put him down but to see what they can do with him. Right now as long as he is still with us we are doing everything we can for our lil boy-this is so difficult for us and him-we are taking him to a 3rd vet tomorrow who also specializes in English Bulldog and getting a 3rd opinion. In the meantime we hope to connect with the breeder next week to return him-we are going to meet by car instead of putting him on a plane which I am sure he would not be allowed to travel by air plus we find it to harsh for him right now being ill and all.

Re: You can't get a good xray of the trachea

thank you so much for your input-the xray we saw looked pretty clear to us. There was no mistake in it what it showed.

Hyperplastic trachea

So sorry for you and so sorry for the puppy. Usually severe cases show up sooner--pups are failure to thrive and show breathing difficulties an experienced breeder can pick up on at an early age. You are lucky that you purchased from an ethical breeder who stands behind her dogs. You should be given a healthy replacement puppy. As to the sick pup, as a breeder I would probably take him back myself and wait and see how he does. The pup is going to continue to grow--not just on the outside but all his internal parts. Lungs and trachea will also grow and mature maybe to the point of being an adequate size for a good quality pet life so I would not be quick to put him down. You said he got sick within a few days of bringing him home. This could be due to stress from a change in environment and more handling then he was accustomed to having. However another choice could be to leave it up to you. If you are attached to the pup and I am sure the pup is to you, you might want to keep him and try to give him the best most loving home you can until there is no other option but to put him to sleep--or he dies on his own. You, of course, would have vet bills if you tried to treat him. It really does depend on how truly bad he is. A lot of vets unless very experienced with Bulldogs are the voice of doom too soon. There are very few vets that I, myself, would trust at making this call at the pups present age.

You can't get a good xray of the trachea

While he is sick. Clear up the URI completly and then get another xray. Good luck!
