Funny thing about the crate. He still goes there right after his final trip outside for the night. So, we have him get in his crate for his bedtime snack, but since we don't close the door, he then follows us back to the front of the house and gets in his living room bed to sleep. He has gotten his bedtime snack in his crate for his whole life. There may be some comfort for him in continuing that ritual.
I sometimes have him go in his crate when I use the vacuum cleaner. He tends to go beserk (loud barking, growling and charging) over the "big black monster." I think he is really afraid of it. When I vacuum I think he feels safest in the crate. He curls up and takes a nap there with the crate door shut and the room door shut. After the vacuuming is done and the cleaner is put away, he is happy to come back out of his crate. So, the crate still has a use for brief periods of time, but not for all night.

Spanky slept until almost 7:00am for the last two mornings. We have been actually waking Spanky up. Another change the vet had us make was to start giving him a Pepcid AC every night. That might be helping him to be a little more comfortable too. Knock on wood... hope it lasts. As my husband said this morning, we are actually starting to live a civilized lifestyle around here! Happy, happy, happy!
well I'll be darned.....
