How long to pups need heating pad

When can the pups go without he heating pad. At 18 days old some are off the pad. Are they okay even if they don't get back on the pad? At what age do I remove the heating pad? Should I switch to the heat lamp for more coverage? Please, any inputs would be nice. Thank You.

By the time they can move around more freely,

at about 3wks, they should know if they are seeking warmth. I am the additional vote for keeping the pad for another week or two, only on half the whelping box so they can go to it if they wish. The downside of a heating lamp is that it scatters heat to a much wider field and those pups that are not wanting additional heat will get warm too...more chance for them to dehydrate a bit if overheated.

Can I turn off pad?

When can I turn off the pad? When exactly can they generate their own heat? Thanks

When do they start generating their own heat?

You really don't want "more coverage"....

You want an area where they can go if they get to warm.

Like Vicky said...put the heating pad on 1/2 the area so they can get on & off at will.

i leave the pad with them for 3 weeks,

turn it down as they get older, if they are off more then on turn in way down, just so they have a place to get to if they get to warm. Make 1/2 the area with the pad and 1/2 w/o the pad.
