How fast is too fast? What are the possible complications?

Well, I've had Mable for about 4 days now. I've completely changed her diet (her mom didn't leave me with her food, so i put her on what my dogs are on, Natural Balance). She has really bad arthritis/HD. I am feeding a little less than what the feeding guidelines suggest on the bag because I need her to lose weight to help her joints. When she came here she was 49.5 pounds and today she weighed at the vet 47.7 pounds. What negative things can happen to a dog who loses weight too fast? I need her to get around 35 pounds, but I don't want to push this old gal.

Re: oh dear, she made me cry!

I just learned about that fancy option at the top so I can read your post and type at the same time haha! I really hope we get to keep her too, she just seems so much more content and less starving for attention now that she's palling around with me and starting to feel better.

Re: Awwww...Mable is so pretty!!

Thank you so much Annie. Mable really likes getting love...even if it's internet love lol. That was exactly what I was thinking, the less weight on the joints for her the better.

Re: Awww! That last pic will melt your heart!

I think that one is my favorite too! She is pretty heavy boned, and her left elbow/shoulder "pops out" when she walks. Appharently she's got a problem in the front and in the back lol. I can tell more now since she's moving around more instead of sitting and laying in one spot.

Re: she is so beautiful

Thank you Penny, I'm glad she's with us too.

Re: very very pretty...Post these pics on the general board...

I didn't realise so many people were following her! When we got her she weighed 49.5 pounds, as of now (the pictures) she's at 47.7 pounds.

Re: Ohhhhhh.............

Thank you so much, she carries a lot of her weight in her keg of a belly lmfao

I hope she lets you care for her

suggest being her "foster" mom, basically you are manipulating her into thinking that however she would be your dog. She can visit whenever she wants happy.gif win/win situation!!!

Awwww...Mable is so pretty!!

I love her!!!

In that first pic she does appear to be larger then she should be but with the stress on the hips/knees you will want her as lean as possible.

My Cain is very thin due to him having VERY bad knees and bad hips. He is in very good shape, and he weights 54 lbs which is ideal for him.

Good luck and thanks for all you are doing for this beauty!

SWEET girl! It's hard to tell in the pics about her weight but it looks like she has very rounded shoulders, so it may be her bone structure adding to the overall appearance of being extremely heavy.

Re: beautiful......

Thank you so much Judy and Wilson! lmfao yes, she is a tub of love! I hope we get to keep her too. I was telling Doug (husband/boyfriend we've been together for over 6 years now, so whatever you want to call him) that she was meant for me. She didn't even look back at her "mom" when she was dropped off. She just seems so much more at ease now.

Re: pictures.........

Do I just use the IMG code?

pictures.........

I use flickr.com I find it easy. It is free. Many people also use photobucket.

Re: Question.......

Oh, there is definitely not a tuck and you have about an inch and a half of blubber to poke before you get to her ribs. She's not so much pear shaped, but Linebacker shaped lmfao. When she lays on her side she has a Preggo belly! How do I post up pictures?

Re: their are no silly questions.....

If I do keep her she will make the switch to Raw. I have yet to really talk to my aunt about it. She did ask me if I wanted her this morning, but I told her that if she thinks she can keep her up, she's better off with her, but if she can't commit to it, then she is more than welcome to stay with me. I told her that I have everything to make her well, and to keep her on track, it is just a matter of her commitment. I kinda left it at that, and we'll see how she feels closer to Thursday.

Re: Question.......

That's good that you are not stuck on a certain # of lbs for her to loose. If you are looking down on the dog, they should be pear shaped, you should be able to feel the ribs, but not see them, she should have a 'tuck up' when viewed from the side. Glad she is starting to feel better.

their are no silly questions.....

everyone of us started some where asking questions reading books...searching the internet....how else will you learn or get ideas....
tums will help keep the stomach acids from bothering her from so many antibotics.....yougurt helps keep the healthy bacteria in the guts active.....
why not feed her raw? if your feeding your others like that? it would be much more healthy.....

Re: dont break the capsules.....

Ahhh, I didn't realize they were time released! I just assumed once the coating started to disolve all the medicine is released.

Will Tums basically do the same as yogurt, well at least the point of using it the way that we are. I know the plain yogurt helps my other dog boost up good digestive bacteria...

I'm sorry for all of the silly questions you guys. I feel like this is my first dog, but really she'll make number 7 for the household.

Re: Question.......

Well, I was thinking 35-40 pounds. Of course I would stop at a higher weight as long as she looked and felt healthier. I haven't been around many other EBs... especially good representatives of the breed she is just super short for having that much weight on her bones.

Yes, she is looking and feeling a LOT better. I've been having her pal around town with me in the car, and she sits here by my legs at work. She's enjoying life, and loves being the center of attention!

Re: breaking up Cepha capsules

Great idea, thank you so much!

judy wilson's picture

dont break the capsules.....

naughty naughty.....those caps help to time release the meds and to keep stomach upset to a min....
peanut buter, cream cheese, hot dogs, those work well....tums before a meal i would go two tums before feeding will help with the upset tummy issues...
ears are proably getting very sensitive and no matter ow careful they hurt....if you can get some lavender oil and apply a little on a blanket or pillow than lay or sit her next to it...laveneder is soothing and this will help her....

Re: breaking up Cepha capsules

breaking up Cepha capsules

That would make the grainy or powdery stuff be loose? It has a bitter, nasty taste she won't like. Can you coat the whole capsule in peanut butter or cream cheese? That works with my dogs when they need to get bad tasting meds down.

Question.......

Why do you have to get her down to 35lbs? 15 lbs is allot of weight to take off, just curious......35 lbs. isn't much for an adult Bulldog. To take weight off, you can replace some of her kibble with green beans so she doesn't feel so hungry. They are low calorie but will help her to feel more full. All bulldogs have an 'undershot jaw' to give her the antibiotics you can wrap in up in a cheese slice or cover it in cream cheese. Is she looking any better? happy.gif

Re: antibiotics can upset the stomach

She does have a really bad undershot (idk if that's the correct term), so I've been breaking open the capsules of the Cephalexin and mixing it with a half wet half dry dog food mixture. Crap! I keep forgetting to pick up the yogurt!!!! my Neela that's on Raw is getting by with Cottage Cheese for now... I will go to the store this evening.

Thank you Robin!

antibiotics can upset the stomach

that may be happening with Mabel. I try to give AB with a meal, or at least a small snack to help prevent tummy woes. Also I give a tablespoon of yogurt with meals, that will help her tummy too.

Re: one lb a week....

Hahaha Oh trust me, I know the suffering that goes on with diets! She is really amazing me with how much of a great sport she is... She's about ready to give up on loving me because of those Malaseb wipes lmfao. Her little face turns into a old prune when i pull those out! I will bump up her feeding, and give her a snack in the middle of the day to slow it down. I've noticed since the antibiotics started kicking in, she has lost a little bit of her appetite... or is it that her tummy has shrunk some?? My aunt had her like a bottomless pit... At my house we have a feeding schedule lol.

judy wilson's picture

one lb a week....

she is having alot of things happening at once...and being on the antibotics...clearing up the ear infections...you dont want the added stress of her feeling hungry or stressed....small steps...i would not push more than a lb a week....you dont want her to be to miserable...and if you have ever had to diet that is a misery!!!!!
