Can someone tell me how I would know for sure if my dog has a grain allergy? He's currently on C. Natural chicken and rice puppy formula and has soft stools. He's gaining weight and active and doesn't seem to have any gastro discomfort. My vet says just hang tight for now and there's no reason for concern. Should I just chill out?!

Thanks for giving me insight. Tuffy does scratch his eye sometime but not excessively but this is definitely something to keep in mind!

Crissy thanks for the post!! So glad to hear that you found out the problem with Bella. If the Lamb and Rice doesn't help I'm going to look into the Natural Balance Grain free. How old was Bella when you put her on the grain free food? And did she continue to gain weight well once you made the switch?

We went through this when Bella was a puppy, she was fine, playf
active only thing was we couldn't get her to have firm poops, we tried everything finally someone on this Board emailed me about " natural Balance Grain free allergy food" so we tried it and after months of liquid stool with in days she was totally pooping normal, so we just always assumed she has a grain allergy and feed her grain free. Also once when she got a stomach bug or something the vet said " hamburg/rice" well she got worse and when I told the vet about the grain allergy they said to stop the Rice ASAP b.c. if she has a grain allgery rice is making it worse, so again we stopped rice and fed just burger ( not that Bella minded a big bowl of nice hamburg) and sure enough she was fine with in a few days.. so that is why we assume she has a grain allergy.
Hope everyone has a great day
for my dog the symptoms were
a strong yeasty smell on her face, even after clearing up the tear stains with Angel's Eyes. She would constantly scratch her face, to the point where her eye got swollen and I thought for sure she had eyelid or eyelash issues. She would scratch her chin on her paws and scratch her face on the carpet, furniture, laundry baskets; anything within reach. She licked her paws all the time. Around her first birthday she got her first yeast ear infection that took a LONG time to clear up. She never had any gastro issues, or soft stools. I switched her to a grain free kibble and she threw it up more often than not. I then swithched her cold turkey to a frozen raw diet and she stopped scratching, her face doesn't smell, her eye isn't swollen, she stopped licking her paws, and her ear cleared up.
