HI, We have two Bulldogs named Luci and Butkus aged 5 and 9. We have alway had allergy troubles with Luci and this past month Luci has had two outbreaks of hives, and has been in various stages of panting and itching since it all started about 3 weeks ago. Our veternarian has done an xray to check her lungs and trachea which she thinks had some bronchitis and poss pneumonia. This was a week after the initial hives outbreak. Been on Clavamox and prednisone since then. Things improved after about two weeks. Luci had releif from the hives but continued to breath hard and pant most of the time. Then after about two days of no breathing issues the hives came back. Another steroid shot and the hives disappeared. That was last Wednesday. She was still panting some until Saturday night and since then she is restless and she is panting even more. Wont lay down, paces around panting. Only sign of skin irriation is a few small red "bites" on her belly. We are on the decreasing dosage of prednisone now at 1/2 a pill every other day. We discussed with Vet about the prednisone adding to panting. I have been giving benadryl about 3 times a day, 25mg, one or one and a half pill each time. Her temp is ok 101.5, and she eats and drinks normally and pottys normal too. Behavior is good, playful and affectionate. If she wasn't panting we would not know there is anything wrong. We have kept her inside in the AC, switched to non allergy laundry soap, bathed her in cool plain water, feed ice chips,no other changes in food or diet or environment. ( other than the corn is in full grow mode here in the midwest!) Pollen counts are high around us.
My question is for all we have tried is there something anyone would suggest to help our Luci? I have a call into our vet this morning to see what she wants to try next. This is all very frustrating to see one of our babies so uncomfortable.
Thanks for any advise, Doug J.
Luci doing a little better
Thanks Rottigirl for your reply. We do not have Luci on a H2 blocker. What should we be looking for if she isnt on this? We are on day three of the Dex and drop down to one pill a day tomorrow, then 1 pill everyother day for 3 pills. It seems to be helping. The panting is reduced significantly but still shallow fast breaths unless she has been excited or out potty and back and she will pant for a short time. She is sleeping a lot better during the night the last couple days too. We are hopeful that she gets back more to normal over the next few days. We are hopeing what ever has caused the hives and allergic attacks will subside quickly as fall approaches and we can get Luci off all these meds. Thanks again for the advise!!

Dex is pretty potent...
The other name for it is decadron. I'm assuming you have the dog on an H2 blocker (tagamet, pepcid, etc)? If not, I would strongly recommend talking to your vet and getting something started.
Your vet may also want to consider a different anti-histamine if the benadryl isn't cutting the mustard. Vistaril may work. There are also others available.
One of the regular posters on here has a dog that was horribly allergic to the sap from new mown grass. It's incredible what our guys will react to!
BTW - the panting may be due to the steroids, too. They also become pretty heat intolerant while on higher dose steroids. Good luck!

you might try.....
i find the humidity worse on my bulls then the heat.....do you have a dehumafider and can you place your panting dog in a room with it....i also find this takes out the pollen....the hives are being caused by a allergy most likely contact possible new cleaning product....wilson is 52 lbs and i can give him 6 benadrly a day pre my vet...i never have but it might help break the cycle...as dogs get older they also have a hard time with food allergies....try a bland diet of brown rice and boiled hamburger...if this is it it will only take a few days to see the difference....
the other thing i just lost my gwen from laryngeal papalysis her first systoms were waking with what i called asthma attacks.... lack of energy and panting just from going down three steps....you may want to pass this by your vet....just a suggestion....

changed medicine
Thank you Judy for your reply!
After a long discussion with our Vet, she has decided to switch from prednisone to Dexamethasone tablets. This Dex is the same drug she gave Luci via injection for the first and second hives outbreak. One tablet twice a day for three days, one tablet a day for three days and then one tablet every other day for three pills. So we shall see what happens now. We are to continue benadryl 25mg every eight hours alternating 2 pills in the am one midday and 2 before bed. We are supposed to observe to see if Luci is more comfortable and report right away if no relief.
Anyone have experience with the tablet form of Dexamethasone?
One source of the allergy may the "red rust" we have on our grass from all the summer rain and humidity. Anyone every have an adverse reaction to this?
Thanks again, Doug and Luci
