Hives!!!

Our five month old bulldog Winnie has broken out suddenly in hives. There has been no changes, environmental or dietary. She has been eating Royal canin puppy (or Bulldog when she gets into the food for the others). Other than the unsightly bumps and obviously frustrating itching she seems normal. I know that people say benadryl is safe for bulldogs. How much would be safe for a 5 month old puppy? Any ideas on what might bring out such a sudden and extreme reaction. This all appeared in a day!

Thanks!

Thanks for you quick and usual support. If I didn't have you all my vet would be crazey and RICH by now. Winnie had a rough night, Itchy and restless I am sure, but this am is much better. Still gonna keep her near to watch and give benadryl till all the hives are gone. Thanks again!!!!

If its only itches on her skin, and her breathing hasn't been

affected, then you are "lucky" and can avoid an emergency trip to the vets. I'd give the one Benadryl tablet every 6hrs and if it hasn't gotten at least notably better (altho maybe takes another day to be 'gone entirely') then do go to the vet in the AM.

With any allergic response, we're concerned with any swelling on the inside, particulary if you see swelling on the face and possibly of the tongue...that's an Emergency situation. Since you suspect the pup age goose poops, you may also want to give some cooked rice or other starchy food for a day to help absorb any excess stomach acids churned up by the "irregular diet". LOL

If the benadryl doesn't help

She may need steroids to help get over the hives. I personally know how bad they itch.

Re: She has to have gotten into something....or

I think I may know......We live on a small lake and had a family of canadian geese call our empty lot next door home till their babies were raised. She has been sneaking over there and, I suspect, sampling the messy leftovers (yuk!!!)How long does it usually take to go away if we are able to keep her from snacking on goose doo?

Maybe have you changed your laundry detergent, or shampooed your carpets, or anything at all similar that you can think of? And..one 25mg tablet is fine for your puppy. It will make the pup sleepy and thirsty, so make sure you give plenty of water and do a second potty before bed!
