Hip Dysplasia - Cosequin DS versus Nuvet Joint plus versus human brand Glucosamine

Hello guys,

The vet has recommended to put Taiko on Cosequin and some inflamatory meds since he was diagnosed with hip dysplasia level one in Dec 2006. Taiko has taken one bottle of 120 tablets of Cosequin DS since then. He is around 60 pounds.

Now, I was doing some research and it seems that the best way would be to supplement him with Glucosamine and Chondroition for long term.

It seems that Taiko limps a little bit after he plays with other dogs or if i leave him off leash for a long time. I dont let him play with other dogs often or run crazy off leash very often, may be once every 2 months. After a day or 2 days, he is back to normal.

I would like to hear what do you guys recommend but i was thinking among these options?

First question:
1) Cosequin
2) Cosequin plus some MSM
3) Nuvet Joint plus
4) Human brand Glucosamine + Chondroitin

Second question:
I am also thinking to add some vitamins in his diet. Which one do you recommend? Pets tabs or Nuvet plus or others.

Third question:
Are there any other supplements i can add such as fish oil, etc?

Thank you again for your time. Your input will be greatly appreciated.

Dosage for Adequan

Hello Jacinda,

So does that mean at the beginning, Morgan was getting a shot which is 5 ml of Adequan per month?

When she was 2 years old, she was getting a shot per month. Are you increasing the frequency now?

What about after lets say a heavy play, do you also give her NSAIDs?

Thanks for your help

Re: Morgan

Adequan is a great drug, and it has been used for years in horses. I went to UC Davis Ortho specialist with a friend of mine and the vets there told us (she is a vet tech) that they havent found any major differences in results giving the injection SubQ or IM, you may want to talk to your vet about that. I have always given it to my old girl SubQ and it has worked great for her...

Morgan

At first, Morgan was stiff when she woke up from a nap. It seemed like it took her awhile to "work out the kinks". Then she started limping from time to time and it progressively got worse until she was limping all the time. Her elbows are not in great shape but it's mainly her hips that are affected.

I do not give the shots because I am a little nervous about giving shots in the muscle. But, you can give it yourself if the Vet demonstrates how. Taiko sounds alot like Morgan did before she started on Adequan. I really can't brag enough about this drug it's been such a blessing to us and Morgan.

The supplements you listed all sound fine but I strongly urge you to at least try the Adequan. I think you'll be delighted with the results.

Adequan

Hi Jacinda,

Sorry to hear about Morgan being diagnosed with HD but glad that she is acting like a super bully lol

Can you please tell me what was the level of HD and whether it was the hips or elbows?

Could you please ellaborate more about her condition without Adequan when she was intially diagnosed with HD?

Also, after a heavy playtime, does she limp? Taiko does limp after a heavy playtime and i am curious to know if Adequan might help. But then I allow Taiko a heavy play time once in every 2 to 3 months. By heavy, I mean off leash and/or may be with other dogs where i let him run without me controlling him for an hour to 2 hours. He takes 1 to 4 days to fully recover. By that i mean, sometimes after he wakes up, he will limp but after couple of movements, he is back to normal. By day 2 to 3, he is like 90 to 95% recovered. But after 4 days, he is COMPLETELY back to normal. Note that on the night of the heavy play, he sometimes groans a little bit and limps more. But if he sees other dogs, it amazes me as he does not limp at all irrespective of whatever days.

Regarding Adequan, do you do the shot yourself?

I am thinking to give him:
1) Gluco/Chondroitin
2) Pure MSM
3) Vitamin
4) Omega

I still need to research a lot about Adequan and talk to my vet about the supplements list and get it approved lol.

Thanks again

Adequan

My girl, Morgan was diagnosed with HD at 2 years of age. We immediately started Adequan injections. She gets one shot a month and it's been a miracle drug for her. She doesn't limp and is able to walk, run and jump. You can also give glucosomine/chondroitin with the Adequan. My Vet told me to get the cheap human kind (it's all the same) and make sure it contained at least 500 mg of Chondroitin. We also give Pet tabs.

I had an ortho vet

From the U of PA strongly recommend MSM with glucosamine/chondroitin supplements. I use the NuJoint Plus. I also give 3V caps as recommended by my vet for the natural anti-inflammatories (GAG's) in it. The 3V contain omega 3 & 6 fatty acids, and Vits A,D, and E and is a Skin and Coat formula. You may also want to research Green Lipped Mussel. It's been shown to be very beneficial in the treatment of arthitis. I believe Sasha's Blend contains GLM along with other good stuff.
As far as vitamins, of course you need to make sure you're feeding a high quality food. Of the two, I prefer the NuVet.

Hi!

I haven't tried the cosequin, but one of my friends uses it with her large breed dog who had CCL surgery. She swears by it. If you use it, I would supplement with MSM. Does Q have hip dysplasia? Well, he's never really had issues with his joints (he just turned 2 in October), but I'm sure he has the very loose bullie hips. My Kano (rottie) will be 8 this year, so she's getting up there. She also has never had problems with her joints other than when she has a flare-up with her lupus. She did have an episode of lupus arthritis (joints swelled up like little balloons), but it resolved when she went into remission with no obvious after effects. Both of the dogs have been on joint supplementation since they were pups. Both of my guys are also in pretty good shape - they're fairly muscular which helps maintain the joints.
I get my NuJoint stuff from a friend of mine who is a distributor. The 3V caps I order from KV Vet Supply on line.
A lot of others on the board do use Sasha's Blend. It has been studied in the use with hip dysplasia and arthritis.

Nujoint

Hi Rotti Girl,

Thank you for your time.

1) Would you say that Nujoint plus might somewhat be better than Cosequin DS since Nujoint plus contain MSM? Did you try Cosequin DS before? I am debating between these two and not inclined to purchase human brands one. However, i am thinking whether Cosequin DS + some MSM might be better than Nujoint plus. Does your bulldog has Hip Dysplasia?

2) I will look at 3V. I will add this to his diet or something similar with the same ingredients if i cant get access to this supplement after i do more research.

3) Which vitamin do you feed your dog. I am thinking Nuvet vitamin?

4) Could you please tell me where you buy your Nujoint and 3V?

We really appreciate it.

Take Care
