Hiccups

My little Stiggy has had hiccups the past few nights, and sometimes during the day. Is this pretty normal for bulldogs? I am wondering if he is drinking too fast or playing too soon after eating or something. I know it isn't a horrible problem, I just want to make sure I am not doing anything or allowing him to do anything that would cause it, because I know its probably annoying to him.

He loves you YEAH YEAH.....yeah, yeah

Oops got carried away. [When that song was new, so was I] Some Bulldogs act aloof. Buddy does, he figures if it's in his interest to let you be nice to him, then maybe. He loves us but he doesn't care for all the love we give him, like face washes, tooth brushing and ear cleaning. But he will always come to let us wipe his Boo-Boo. he likes that. Bulldogs are just like all other dogs, only different. lol

Re: Puppy Hiccups

Omg how cute! He looks like he's smiling!! My husband said, "I'm scared Stig doesn't like us as much as we like him. He never smiles at us." But, honestly, I think he just doesn't open his mouth a lot. With their wrinkles and their little jowls, it's hard to tell unless their mouth is open! He loves to be in our laps and to play with us, so I'm pretty sure he likes us.

Re: Speaking of playing too soon after eating......

Thanks, Rhonda! Don't worry about scaring or making me nervous! I'd rather be too cautious than for something to happen to my little man. Don't you worry, this place will be flooded with pictures! wink.gif

Puppy Hiccups

Seems normal. jmho, Buddy used to get them, as he ate fast, but since he got a little bigger he stopped [hiccups], and now at 11 months he eats kinda slow. I think Buddy's a little over 3 months here in this pic, that's around the age he used to Hiccup.

Speaking of playing too soon after eating......

I don't want to scare you or make you into a nervous wreck, but because Bulldogs are deep or barrel chested they are at risk for bloat or stomach torsion. We just make it a rule not let her play hard or exercise right after eating. Also because Winnie's such a little piggy I got her a "Break Fast bowl" it has the little pegs in it that she has to eat around to make her have to take her time while eating. Hope this helps.

Sounds like you're having a great time w/ The Stig! Keep the pictures coming. He's so cute.

Re: He's probably gulping air with his food

Awesome! Thank you for all the tips. I'll look for these things for sure!

He's probably gulping air with his food

and one satisfactory way to handle this is to slow down the eating by one of these methods: put his kibble in a large bowl and put an inverted smaller bowl in the center of that one...pour the kibble around in a "ring" and he will have to slow down to eat. There are dishes sold (both in pet stores and online that do this for you, all-in-one, preferably stainless steel).

Another way to try to slow down eating is to put kibble on a cookie sheet that has an edge all around...dog will likely have to "chase the food" around the pan and this too slows down eating but may make a bit of a mess for you on the floor.

As for drinking too fast, several here have suggested using a large "rabbit water bottle" which is inverted with a "lick tube" at the bottom. It may take a day or so for the dog to learn how to use it (help him) but that should slow down the gulping and may also help with water puddles on your kitchen floor?! There are lick-it faucets that you can attach to your outside faucet also (on your patio?).
