NOT sure if I spelled hemotoma right..
Bella had to go to the vet this am. she has a hemotoma in her one ear. the vet feels that she might need surgery for this...any thoughts?
we are trying steriods first and they put a needle in and drained it. she shook her head like a wild woman after and the swelling came back. we are also supposed to use warm packs on her ears.
she is resting right now.
any help with hemotoma's??
the e collar was mentioned yesterday too..
yesterday they flushed out her ears and cleaned and such and she was shaking her head all the time right afterwards. they put in a needle and drained it but it came back right away too.
they suggested an e collar..they thought it might help with her shaking her head..but do not notice her doing it much today...and she hates an e collar on...lol
if she keeps up the shaking though..an ecollar is likely
Dozer had one on his back leg..
We treated it with steroid drops and an e-collar. It took a few weeks to go away because he kept chewing on it and got it infected. We didn't want to do surgery because of the area it wa son, there was so little skin and it was so easy to chew. So with the e-collar and drops in 2 months it was gone. haven't had any since.
thanks for your input
maybe it will clear on it own in time..
been maybe a week that she has had it..
might need more time
there is no infection..we checked for that yesterday at the vets.
hmmm...My pug is always cleaning Bella...
wander if that was what happened as well here too
she did have a scrape on that ear as well
I notice though that Zeena is alawys bathing Bella...
the vet checked her for an infection..but there was nothing there
with it being soo small...hope it just goes away on its own
I can not see putting her through surgery for this one
and sure do not want to do that.
the reason that they suggested pred is because of the swelling in the ear. supposed to help bring down the swelling ...
I do not know that much about pred to be honest
tried to do some reading on this on the net last night
almost all the sites suggested surgery..as the best option
but not going there until everything else is checked
I will give it a few weeks to a month to correct itself
thanks for your input Vicky
Bella's was about a month too, her whole ear was swollen
then Breve' got one and it was about 3 weeks. Neither had ear infections, or shake the head. My girls are huge ear lickers and i think they might have got a bit agressive with cleaning duty.

Re: how long does that take Vicky???
took my girl's about a month to go totally away but her's was a huge one. Vet had her on an antibiotic and ear drops for her ear infection.
how long does that take Vicky???
this has been like this for a bit
I just read on the treat thread that you do not think we should use pred for this
but how long does it take to go away on it own.
the hemotoma is pretty small but noticeable..
I never noticed it until i was petting her ear and seen it
I've had this happen more than once...
The first time I paid to have the dog anesthetized and have the ear "sutured like mattress ticking" and it healed but I later learned that many don't go this route. On later ones I tried to drain the ear with a needle at home, a few times, but the hole would close within hours and the ear refilled with blood/fluid so after a couple days I just left it alone and the ear did return to almost-normal size but a little thicker, which in the case of Mimi, caused some "droop". If this is not a "show dog" then I would leave it alone (compresses are fine, they may help and cannot hurt) and trying Pred should be helpful, but basically I would let it be and expect that the ear would heal on its own in 1-2weeks. Discourage additional head/ear shaking, obviously, and check inside of the ear for any obvious annoyances but don't flush because that damp feeling will undoubtedly encourage head shaking. Let us know if the Pred works!
And let me just say this too....
the drain the vet put in, he was NOT put under. Basically just a needle was poked into the hematoma itself, and a piece of plastic "tubing" for lack of better words, was threaded over the needle and into the ear, and the needle then put out. Took a whole 5 minutes.
Definately isn't something I would put them under for, and the one on my one girl resolved on its own without any medication or anything.
Hope this helps.
This is going to sound......
crazy but I use to have a St Bernard and this happened to him. Vet drained the hematoma then used cold compress on the ear put a clip which looked like a clothes hanger clip over the compress. It wasn't so tight that it caused a torniquit affect but about an hour later it stopped bleeding.
different but it worked.

Re: how long did the drain go in for??
The drain was left in for a week on my boy.
Depending on the diameter of the needle they used, you may be able to try to express some of the fluid back out. But may not be able to if they just stuck a needle in and pulled back the fluid into a syringe.
my boy had a hematoma
WE had it drained. Came back next day. Just left it alone and it went away on its own in about a week to ten days. I did not want to do the surgery. Not a major problem.
been like this a few days already...maybe longer..
the vet nor I am sure how long this has been here.
she started off with some type of scratch on her ear and now this happened.
the scratch was a few weeks ago..not sure if they are related.
hoping the pred. works..
Besides the Pred, do lots of warm compresses.
Don't let her shake her head if at all possible. I would NOT do surgery unless it is an absolute last resort.
Amy and Sophia
leave it alone its a broken
blood vessel, once it clots the blood will absorb in the body. The ear might or might not be a bit wrinkled.

how long did the drain go in for??
they put a needle in today...but took like 5 minutes to drain it and then she shook and the swelling came back. just wander how long the drain was in for your bulldog Jessica..
prednisone...
that is what they put Bella on. she is on them for about 16 days... so see how this goes
hopefully surgery is not required.
Rico had one vet gave med and it went away.

I don't think surgery is required
Morgan has had two and each time we treated with prednisone. It eventually went away and you can't even tell she had one.
Re: Hemotoma..questions
I have actually had 2, on 2 different dogs. The first one I had I had a drain put in, and it came down nicely. The second one on the other dog, went away with some time on its own.
