Hello,
My 8 month old boy Hurley has swollen eyes (the right eye is more swollen then the left).
He was fine when he woke up this morning, however, at some point after I put antibacterial ointment in his eyes (Vetropolycin) to treat discharge that he's been having, he began rubbing his face on the carpet. After doing that for a while and pawing at his face a little, his eyes became puffy. Any ideas on whats causing this? I gave him some Benadryl and he doesn't seem to want it itch his face anymore. I can't tell if the swelling is going down yet, but at the very least it doesn't seem to be getting worse.
The last few weeks since it's been colder and we've been running the heater more, I've noticed that he wakes up in the morning with a runny nose and some clear to grayish discharge from his eyes. He loves to sleep with his face smashed right up against the heating vent in my bedroom, so I figured that the runny nose and eye discharge was a result of dust being blown into his face all night from the heater since the symptoms go away once he's up and around in the morning.
He's always had a little eye discharge off and on since I brought him home. It's always been clear to grayish and never yellow or green. The ointment always clears it up when I'm diligent about giving it to him, but I probably don't stay on top of it as much as I should.
Other then being puffy, his eyes look fine. They are clear and moist, he's not blinking or squinting, and there doesn't seem to be any sign of irritation to the eyeball itself. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thank in advance!
Brandon

I would agree that some cool (not iced) compresses
laid across the eye for several minutes, 3-4 times a day should help reduce any swelling along with the Benadryl. The eye meds should't have caused a problem since you've been using them on/off for a while. Maybe the rubbing on the carpet is what caused the swelling? If you begin to accumulate vet bills for eye problems you might consider purchasing a humidifier to use in your home when you have the heat on...for bully's health and your own too.
are you sure....
thats not a abcess starting....my guy wilson lays with his face against a heater and his nose runs and his eyes bother him....so needless to say i dont let him do it....
if your sure thats not a abcess and just from him rubbing his face.. put a cold pack on it....dont let him sleep on the vent....i would not let him get in the habit of drying his eyes out then rubbing his face raw....your going to have big eye problems down the road....
also check his nose wrinkle and make sure thats not getting yucky...sometimes wilson nose rope gets yucky and he gets puffy eyes...
