Our bully has gone into heat 1 week before her already scheduled spay appointment.
What would be the best to do wait for the heat to finish and spay or still spay while in heat?
I don't even know if our vet will spay during a heat? This just started tonight-will have to wait til Monday to call vet.
Any information would be appriciated. Thank you.
This happened to us as well and we ended up postponing the surge
for about 2 months. The vet told us there is an increase possibility of bleeding if they are in heat and immediatly after.
Her heat cycle lasted about three weeks and she hated her diaper. She did great after her surgery though.
Good Luck.
I had to wait 6-8 weeks for the hormones to settle here too.
Bella did the same thing. a week before she was due for her spay..she went into heat.
the vet waited about 2 months for the hormones to settle..
it is far better to wait..
really be careful of her around any other dogs..
you will get visitors at your house from FAR away..lol
gotta really watch her..
not sure of the number of days but sure it is a few weeks
dogs can smell her miles away..
Thank you
Thank you for the replies. I figured it was best to wait.
no dont wait......
same thing happened with us and our girl our vet would not do it! and told us not to do it.. bully's have enough risks with being put under... when you spay in heat they bleed more than if they were not in heat... there for you run a great risk of them being under for longer and them losing more blood. It was just not a risk I was willing to take nor was our vet... its a long hard thing to wait out but its better for her. I found a child's bathing suit with a sanitary napkin worked best for Abby ....... I also have been told adult depends fit well. Good Luck!
I don't believe the vet will
Spay during heat. The hormones are in an uproar and can lead to intra-op and post-op complications.
It's best to wait till after the heat cycle is done to allow the hormone levels to return to normal before you spay. Your vet will give you a timeframe. I've heard anywhere from weeks to a few months.

Another voice for waiting about 6wks, until hormones settle down
Talk with your vet office on Monday and see what they recommend in terms of waiting time.
