Help Dozer is sick!!!

Hi all,
I havent been here in a gazillion years. Time just flies by. I hope all of you and your bullies are well. I am having a problem with Dozer. He is 7 1/2 now (holy cow) and he is looking like an old man. It is breaking my heart. He just started losing weight quickly you can feel his bones now. He eats plenty and drinks plenty but has aweful runny diahrea. And he has been going all over the house. I brought him to the vet about a month ago because this started happening then and the vet said he ate something bad. Go figure a bully to eat something he's not supposed too. Anyways he said give him boiled chicken and white rice and gave him a shot of antibiotics along with a perscription for antibiotics because he had a low grade fever. He seemed much better until 2 days ago when it started all over again. My question is do you think he is just getting into something that he shouldn't be or is there another underlying problem? I cant help but wonder if it is his age. He is my first bully and I dont know what the signs are of later in life pups. I am so sad. I dont know what I will do when it is his time.

Re: Help Dozer is sick!!!

That is good they did blood work. But is it recent? It could be a colitis issue. If a dog has a stomach issue there is special food that you can get from the vets that will be easier on the stomach. Have they xray'd his stomach or done an ultrasound on his abdomen? The thing that would be most concerning to me is the fact that he is eating and continuing to loose weight. Something is not right. And of course the watery diarrhea. My guy had IBD and we had to go to special food and meds for the remainder of his life. I could only get the food from my vets. He did great on it. He was diagnosed with it when he was 9. I did not have your specific symptoms but it was something that we could not get under control until I took him to the internist.
Have they checked for parasites? Done a urine sample? All those things should be checked if this is continuing. I think you are on the right track, just need to get the answers so your boy can start to feel better. Sending good thoughts your way and hope to hear back that you found what is wrong and he is feeling better. Best of luck to you and your baby.

They did blood work and it came back clean. I will call the vet today and get him back over there. Thanks for your input

Re: Help Dozer is sick!!!

It sounds to me like your vet has not really gotten to the bottom of the problem. At 71/2 I would not say that it is at the end but he definitely has something going on. Especially if he is eating and continuing to loose weight. He needs to go back to the vets quickly so he does not get dehydrated. That can happen very quickly if they have watery diarrhea. You can give Pedialyte to help balance his electrolytes. Not sure if your vet is a "bulldog vet" but if not then I would find one in your area, some one that has seen a lot of bulldogs. It is always scary in an older dog because a lot of things can start to change as they get older. I had a male that had some issues that my regular vet could not diagnose and they referred me to an Internist who did a series of tests and diagnosed the problem right away. It was not cheap, but we got to the problem and got it under control. No one can say when the "end" is coming, but there are a lot of bulldogs out there that are living to 10 years and some older. Not sure if your dog is getting into anything while he is unattended but he definitely needs to go back to the vet sooner then later and get to the bottom of this. Have they done blood work? If you are not getting the response from your vet to get to the bottom of this, then I would find a new vet.

Yep, try to get a stool sample to your vet.

He could have any number of things going on right now, a stool sample and blood panel would be a good place to start.

I would suggest bringing a stool sample for them to test and have them run another blood test. Good luck.

Hug your bulldog every day.
