HELP! coughing after spay question

Audrey is coughing/gagging/vomiting. It's not like a normal stomach heaving vomit, it's definitely a coughing up mucous, and gagging on it. She's been doing it off and on but this last "on" seems to be much longer. AT what point should I become worried about it? SHe hasn;t had any water or food sonce last night.

Tramadol

at night kept her sleeping and a little less rambunctious the following days. and as Rottigirl advised, it kept my sanity that she wouldnt hurt herself. good advice and now Josie is back to normal. amazing, wish I had recovered from my hysterectomy that easy and quick, tee hee. glad all is well and you could probably use a good nights sleep. let us know how her morning goes..... I was so freakin worried about her too!

Don't get me wrong I am thrilled to see her up but can't help but wonder if it's like the eye of a storm. Talk about an emotional roller coaster.

mainly because she was vomiting

and I was unsure how her stomach would handle it. There is nothing about the coughing on my instructions, I am definitely going to tell him he needs to add it. Audrey is my first bulldog and anything that involves her breathing in any way just makes me nervous.

the little brat

woke up all perky and happy and jumped up and put her front paws on my legs! She has patted her ball around a bit, and chewed on a bone, and begged for french fries. She even chased the cat before I told her to stop. How am I supposed to keep her quiet for two weeks when she is running around after a few hours!

that is so true!

She is 15, not that it makes a huge difference. She was 14 in the picture. She is the youngest and was just lost whenher sister went off to college.

Why aren't you feeding her???

She can have some throat irritation from the intubation tube (trachea tube)but she should be allowed a half-meal this evening and if you want to give her something "soft and smoothe" you can consider some oatmeal or mashed potato mixed with one scrambled egg. Also, re the water, she can have some of that too, but I'd limit the water dish to one-inch at a time and if she can hold that for at least an hour, then she can have a refill. Usually the take home instructions (or your bill) will have a notation saying that some coughing for the first 24-48hrs after anesthesia is not unusual but if it persists beyond that, let the vet know. happy.gif

Very similiar

Josie liked her chest rubbed but not for long. she layed on her tummy with her feet underneath her and then she finally rolled over and slept on her side after the pain meds took affect. i feel for you with all you have going on. your daughter being 14 is a tough one to handle, but what else do you do? there is a reason for everything and after all is said and done it will all be 20/20. doesnt make it any easier right now but we only get as much as we can handle. If you are a spiritual person then you know that praying for change is telling the Maker that we know better than he/she does, tee hee. J & T

Joise Louise

sleeps on my bed as well, but she wanted no part of that. i put her up on my bed and she paced. so i put her down and made a pillow nest with extra blankets in the center. how is she doing now?

CathyandAudrey's picture

she usually sleeps in my bed

but I am going to put her in her crate tonight. I am scared one of us will kick her in our sleep! The crate is in our room, and the 2 other dogs are in there as well. I am SO GLAD we used her crate from the first day we got her! She only started sleeping with us maybe 2 months ago. Now she loves her crate and it's her little haven.

so far sleeping still

So for the time being doing OK. I hope the yogurt wasn't a mistake! I only gave her a teaspoon of it. I have 3 days of pain meds too. My nerves really are shot, so much emotional junk with my daughter, and I just get extra worried about Audrey. She came out of her crate to come sleep by me. Same with her too, no touching unless she asks for it. She likes her chest rubbed and she wanted that for a bit. She is actually laying stretched out now instead of curled up and snoring away, so she seems much more restful. I am hoping some food in her tummy will help it calm down.

Pat that is wild

Josie did that, I actually rubbed her head & neck to wake her up. it was pitiful, i thought she was having a nightmare. Wow, I guessed it was the meds, she was hallucinating. thanks for that info. J & T

by tomrrow MORNING..mark my words...........24 hrs later...

YOU will not believe it is the same girl.

one thing that my boston did the night after her spay was this odd shaking and crying in her sleep.
the vet told me that was normal too.with the anestetic you might want to keep her crate close to you tonight.
does she sleep in your room normally??

TamsenNJosie Louise's picture

Josie snuffled

for 2 days after and then it was gone. i gave her a pain med thur, fri, and sat night so she would sleep and recuperate and so yesterday and today she is back to normal. i gave josie a little yogurt the night we got home, not good. she heaved and probably the dairy made her more "congested." but it sounds like little Audrey is doing okay now huh? if she can hold down a little food that is great, and sleep is the ticket. How are you doing? I was pretty wrapped up the night she got home, i stayed up with her until she fell asleep. They like the security of someone close by but no touching, that is how josie was. keep us posted on her recovery. J & T

CathyandAudrey's picture

Thanks!

That congested sound is EXACTLY what she sounds like! She actually came out of her crate and came to sit with me on her bed by the computer. She slept for 20 mins or so then woke up and went snuffling in the food bowl, so I gave her a tiny bit of food and yogurt. She ate like it's been years since her last meal! I only gave her a few bites though. She seems much better, and at least I know I don't need to be so worried when she coughs like that.

Hi Cathy

Josie did the same thing when she came home. my vet included instructiosn that indicated she would cough and have a "congested" sound. she did but it is all gone now. Josie threw up as well i believe it was 3-4 times. my vet said she wouldnt need any pain meds the night i took her home but her body language said she hurt so i gave her another pain med. she zonked out and kept her snoozy thru the next day. i just got home or i would have offfered this sooner. she just needs to get to sleep and pain meds did the trick for Josie Louise. tamsen

alot to go through...for you and for her..poor girl...

she will be much better in a bit..
she needs rest
that is the best thing for her..right now really...quiet and rest..
post on the general board..as well...
that will make you feel much better as well..

Thanks Pat!

You are like my second panic button!

she can have water

and half her food but she isn't moving. She is staying in her crate. I put some water on my fingers and she licked a bit but she's just not interested, and I'm not going to push it.

both sites said the same thing...also .............

alot of time people on the general board do not read the medical board.
I think you should post this same thread on both boards..alot of people do that
that way....quite a few more people will read it as well
will keep looking for updates here..

CathyandAudrey's picture

That was very helpful!

Thanks Pat! She is sleeping now. My nerves are shot. The er vet is 30 mins away, and it would be a miserable ride for her. I think as long as she's not stomach heaving vomiting and it's just gagging on mucous I'll keep her home. If she gets worse though we'll definitely go. She isn't having any trouble breathing, it's just she'sll cough then gag. That info said that the coughing wasn't unusual so that mademe feel better.

Part of me would say to just take her in.........but............

the other part says she has been through alot today and back to the vet would be really rough on her too right now.
letting her rest is the best thing for her.
it is like people too..annestic takes a kicking on us as well..and takes awhile to work out of our systems too.
maybe just see how she is in a bit.........

here is a link right to another vets site

http://blogs.dogster.com/vet_blog_information_advice/why-do-pets-cough-after-surgery/

that explains it better
likely the intubation by the sounds of it
I bet some water might help her though
did the vet not say she could have anything..
like eating or drinking..??

this is from a vets site on the net....

What to expect postsurgery
Some clinics allow you to pick her up and take her home the day of the surgery, and some want her to remain overnight.
Pain medication can be given for those dogs who need it, but most don't.
She might be a little nauseated and not eat normally for a day or two afterwards.
Restrict her activity for the following week, since a lot of movement or exercise can cause swelling or allow fluid to accumulate under the incision.
Stitches will need to be removed after about seven to 10 days, depending on the type of stitch material used. Your veterinarian will give you details about how to check that the incision is healing, and when to come back in for this final detail.
Some dogs cough after surgery because the anesthesia tube, which is put down the throat, can cause irritation. Don't worry unless it last more than a couple of days; after that, call your vet.
What to watch for after the surgery
If she persists in licking the stitches, an Elizabethan collar (which looks like a plastic lampshade and is available from your vet and from pet supply stores) can prevent her. She'll probably bonk into doorways and slop her drinking water while wearing it. Remember, she should sleep with it on.
If liquid drains from the incision, take her in to the vet.

Have an Elizabethan collar ready at home in case she needs it. It's a lot easier to have it on hand than it is to run out and get one while she's chewing stitches into little pieces of expensive thread.

Yes. A dog can have a discharge after being spayed. This is quite probable if she was older and/or spayed during her heat cycle. New User, Nov 16 2009

my husband breeds tropical fish

in the attached garage and my whole house is excessively moist. He has well over a thousand gallons of water in there. I am not sure if the er vet would be helpful and only say to bring her in.

not at this time

it's only the ER vet. My 2nd Mom works at a vets and she is my panic button, she seems to think it's from the intubation too and should be fine. It is very disturbing though

I was thinking the same thing

I had a boston that came home the day of the spay years ago....she had to have an emergency spay on xmas eve. and I remember her coughing alot and had mucus in there too.

I would call the vet and find out though Cathy
give you some piece of mind
but I bet it is the tube that is doing that as well

try a cool mist vaporizer if you got one as well
put it in the room that she is in
and do NOT NOT put any meds in it...just the cool mist
it really does help them breathe better

Probably from the intubation tube...

would be my guess. Is your vet reachable by phone?
