I recently acquired a very pretty young female. She looked to be in perfect condition was current in shots and had been treated with ivomec. Has anyone had experience treating a female that has tested positive for heartworms? She previously had a litter of puppies. We are afraid her heart would not be healthy enough to ever
have another litter.
You need to consult your trusted veterinarian on this.
She should be double-checked to be sure the test performed was correct, and then treatment begun to deal with the heartworms, until she gets a 'clear' test. Then, depending on her overall health, and what damage the heartworm treatment may have in long-term evaluation is something you need his/her expertise on.
I'm sure that some pups come from hw-positive bitches, when owners don't know enough to test, or don't care to, but if you love your dog for herself (and not her breeding capabilities) then you start with treatment needed for her well-being, and go from there.
