Well, Frank is now 8 months old. He had Demodex mange that I posted about a few months back that he took medicine, promeris and a medicated shampoo. Since then I switched him to a grain free diet. He has been on that for about 3 months. I noticed a spot on the top of his shoulder blades. I took him to the vet because I am trying to get a case of Entropion in his right eye taken care of. The vet did a scrape in three spots to check for Demodex. Nothing! Now I do not no if i just hadnt noticed this but his coat all over seem a little rough. It almost looks like he has been lying on a tightly woven grid or something, but no hair is missing other than the two spots. Could it be stress from his eye? Could it be an allergy? The only thing new in his diet are a few treats from a training regimen started about two to three weeks ago. Please help. I feel so sorry for my little guy.
Seasonal allopacia
2 years ago we noticed our bull dog Guinness had to almost bald spots on either side of him in March, perfectly symetrical. When i took him to the vet, they did all the test for Thyroid as symetircal hairloss is a symptom and tests came up negative. Through research i did i found that he had this or sometimes it is called Seasonal Dysfutnional disorder such as humans get with a lack of sunlight. But this years was not too bad! I have to put his Georgia Bull Dogs jersey on him when he is outside to avoid sunburn!

Similar issue/ Looks like a boil on bullys face
I know bulldogs are prone to all kinds of skin issues. My bully developed a round circle (size of dime) and looks like a boil on jaw above upper lip in the folds and no hair looking thing with fluid in it on his side of face behind jaw. I took him to Vet Dr at Butchko's ofc and they put him on Cephalexin and Panalog ointment. Other than that he seems fine. It's been 1 week now since the vet visit and it looks better with no fluid and less pink but still noticeable and it appears the hair is slightly growing back but still showing bare skin. I will take him in for recheck. They did not run any tests on him. Any thoughts? Thanks, Susan

Be careful of Promeris
My puppy had a mild case of Demodex and my Vet prescribed Promeris to be
given like a flea treatment: btwn the shoulders once a month for 3 months.I was optimistic as my Male bullie was on Ivermectin for several months a few years back and it was EXPENSIVE and took many months to cure. Well,
The first 2 doses, no problem. The third, she had a bad reaction and scared the
crap out of me!! Feverish, lethargic , and out of it. She could hardly walk that night.
The next day she was fine and my Vet said that I was the first one he knew to have a reaction to Promeris. I would just make sure you can be around the first 24 hours after a dose. The demodex went away, but like I said, it was scary for me!

Seasonal Allopacia
Hi-
Is the skin under the patch dark? It sounds like your puppy may have Seasonal Allopacia. My bulldog has it. I only found out about it from a vet who specializes in Bulldogs. It just occurs because they do not have a lot of UV receptors in that spot and especially during the darker months of the year they will lose their hair.
I hope this helps.

Not sure of the cause...
But Q started losing hair on the side of his face (he has never had mange) and was looking decidedly moth-eaten. I put him on Nu-Vet tabs, and it cleared up in 3 weeks. Hair is completely grown back. Wish I had a clue as to what caused it in the first place, but I figured it sure wouldn't hurt to boost his immune system.

The vet was not the normal specialist I go to, Butchko. I feel there are good and bad things about going to him. The local normal vet that I go to did do scrapings in three different places. A little further into the explanation on my pups condition, he does not itch at all, there do not seem to be any more spots appearing, there are a total of two on his back. One is about 2 inches by 1 inch. the other is maybe a 1/2 inch max around. Both areas of skin look healthy and no irritation at all. As far as the promeris goes, when he did have demodex I put it on every two weeks, his case cleared up in about a month. It seemed to work really well.

I think i know what you are describing
I had this happen with oneof my pups once. The hair looked uneven in that grid formation. It was just normal puppy shedding of the coat. I would continue to bath the dog in a medicated shampoo being it had demodex then apply a deep conditoner and brish the coat out with a zoom groom. use the zoom groom when wet in backwards formation then again when dog is dry. See if in a few months the hair doesnt start to even up again..My guess is this is normal uneveing of the coat that is sheding on top of demdextic mange recovery. I would not be too worried yet.

Do you mean Promeris
Promeris is used to treat demodectic mange. we use it often with rescues. It contains amitraz which is what is in the mitaban dips.
When using Promeris for mange we apply every two weeks until 2 negative skin scraping appear then keep the dog on it monthly for life to prevent reoccurnace as it is also a feal med etc.
There is also advantage Multi which works similar but with ivermectin as active ingredient.

Questions, please.
Is this a "bulldog vet"...one that has been recommended by other bully owners here, acknowledged on the Home Page of Bulldogsworld? If so, you shouldn't have had any doubts whether the scraping (usually done in 3 different locations to make sure you're getting a wide sampling of skin surface) was done well. Concurrent with mange many dogs develop a bacterial infection on their skin, mostly resulting from scratching, but also because the system is compromised during this time and that alone can be enough to encourage a staph infection, which may be the problem now (your description of both thin spots as well as uneven coat = "moth eaten appearance). Your vet should have been able to address this question too. Still, it may or may not require antibiotics to overcome, so you may want to wait another week or so to check for changes. As for the dry fur, that can usually be improved with addition of fish oils to the diet, preferably salmon oil but that can be expensive. Many large discount stores like Costco or WalMart sell fish oil capsules that can be given (one daily) to supplement the diet and this should help any dog, especially one who is regrowing his coat. Do you give a daily canine multiple vitamin product? I highly recommend that, and there are numerous good products on the market, some that include fish oil in the compound, so ask for recommendations here or do a bit of research. Lets build up his immune system!!!
Promeris as treatment for mange seems to be a relatively new regimen so some of us aren't sure what to expect in terms of speed and completeness of recovery...we need input from you and other owners to make a composite evaluation. I thank you for writing us.
