GUS has to spend the day at the VET....

Well Gus is going to go the vet next week for the day. NOT cause he is sick but so they can observe him in his actions.
being deaf, the vet is writing a paper here and wants to watch how Gus behaves and so on.
she thinks too many dogs that are deaf end up in shelters..because people think the dog is not obedient and such... they will try different things with him and watch the hand signs that he knows too.
so he is the study material for the day..lol
and he is pretty impressed. HE LOVES The vet and all the assistants and all the fuss and muss over him. he is a hoot to be around too......and if not for me..the VET would adopt him I am sure.. they even said that Gus could stay a couple of extra days for free when he got neutered..lol.
so wish him luck..and HOPE that he behaves for the day..
it is no cost to ME for the day and maybe he can help another dog.
there are many deaf older dogs that the vet sees, but NOT many young dogs..so she thought of Gus for her studies.
the vet is covering the cost of his next bag of dogfood too...

yes..some bullies would loose some hearing with age I think

YOU can test their hearing..by

banging to frying pans together and see if you get a response.
yell out there name..really loud
try to ring the doorbell
come in the other room and see if they hear you coming..
jingle the car keys..

at the vet what we did, it is an in an out door in the examing room. the vet went out and I got Gus attention on me..and she walked in the back door..NOTHING at all. he made no response till he seen her and then..lol. he had lots to say and do

I think that they will be testing more or less for deaf younger dogs..but not sure about that.
all breeds can loose their hearing from many medical conditions too....
hopefully this helps many other breeds out there too

good thing Gus is the loveable, hugable, and playful bully that he is. Bella is totally opposite and do not think she would be a good FUN STUDY case..lol. Gus will be totally entertaining for all concerned. the vet is bringing in her kids as part of this too..to interact with Gus. HE LOVES kids too.

thanks Elaine

YES I can see if I can do that for you.

I wish I had known earlier that he was deaf. MY life would have made more sense..lol. but anyhow he does fine now and a great pet.

Gus says thanks too.

IF only one dog gets helped it makes it worth it. the vet was more surprised then me that Gus was deaf. really he just seemed to be stubborn to be honest. the vet wants to see how he responds on the CONCRETE floor. at home he would get all kinds of vibrations and such..the concrete does not so.........they will get a better idea of his reactions..

wander how many dogs end up in rescue....without knowing the dog is deaf???

thanks Elaine

Wonderful

If she writes a medical paper, and the journal reference is made available to you, perhaps you could share that with us! It would not only be of general interest, it may provide extra insight and help to those who work with Rescue. Good Boy, Gus. happy.gif

I do have an awesome vet

well in the beginning I had no idea he was deaf either. he did come when he was called..thought he was just being as stubborn bully. when I had some work done on the house and he slept through the guys working on the front door with the drills and such I knew something was wrong.
he came from great lines of show dogs on both sides of his pedigree. soooooo it took 2 years to find out he was deaf. we did the baer test and he is totally deaf.

he does well for himself though and my life is soo much easier now that he understands the hand signs.

he was always a loveable and sweet bully since he was a puppy....but NOW he is more manageable as an adult. that is the good thing

LOOKING at him..you culd never ever tell he was deaf.

Wow,Pat! That is very cool. You are lucky to have such an AWESOME vet. I'm sure he is right about people now knowing their dogs are deaf.

Interesting

Gus sounds adorable! I have suspected Spanky may have some hearing loss, although I'm sure he is not totally deaf. He can certainly hear the crunchy dog food hitting his dish!

I wonder if, like humans, dogs lose some of their hearing in old age? Spanky is 8 years old.

He has the same loud bark as you describe and he startles easily. I think it is just certain frequencies he is missing. He hates the vacuum cleaner, lawn mower, leaf blower and doorbell. He does not come when called, but I think that is a behavioral thing. His ears do perk up when he hears the word "treat." He is such a sweetheart.

Hope Gus has a fun time at the vet office. I'm sure the staff there will enjoy him!

as the vet said NO dog is exempt from it happening to them.

so.that being said
hopefully it helps out all the different breeds..not just the bullies..
coming from awesome lines and so on..just never in my life expected a deaf dog...
but on the same token...who the heck could live without GUS>>LOL> he is the household clown and the vet might be ready to give him back at the end of the day..lol with his antics..

somethings I can actually help the vet too with him .. he barks in the middle of the night quite a bit. apparently deaf dogs feel vibrations in the bed from the other dogs and YOU moving and that can make them bark.

Gus perfers the floor..........so he gets his piece and quiet sleeping there..

I got the question from outsiders here if Deaf dog bark. well the biggest issue is not barking, Gus barks but because he can not hear himself..HE SOUNDS like a big BIG HUGE dog..he is really super loud.

Deaf dogs

I'm a pet-dogtrainer at a local club for more that 20 years now and I remember a Great Dane in one of my puppygroups. I think it was my second or third year, and we just couldn't get a grip on this dog. He was a sweet boy, but he just didn't listen......

Years later I met his owner with her 2nd dog, and she told me they had found out after years and years that he was totally deaf. He lived a good life with her, but boy, it would have been so much easier if she had known that he was deaf.

Since then I always sent people to their vet for a total workout, when there are problems we can't get better. Only then, we are more or less sure there isn't a medical reason for problem behaviour.

What a terrific vet!

I am so impressed with your vet and will also be happy to read the paper about deafness.

I bet MORE THEN ONE OF THEM...

but how can you tell really..right
who would think to
test for deafness.

good way to test your own bully is
to jingle car keys
yell their names
bang 2 pans together
and ring the bell...

wish I had known those simple things in the beginning..

the VET thinks that Gus will be a good student. he is friendly with the world, he will do fine there. I bet there are lot of breeds that get misunderstood with deafness.
LIKE I said before If Gus would not be allowed to stay here.he would go adopted by the vet, he is truly a hit at the office..when he goes

that is great INFO...good for you.

there was a behaviourist on a talk show on the radio here one day discussing dogs and such. I got rather ticked off at her..in her saying that all dogs can be trained. she never mentioned to check the medical side. I called into the station and told her about Gus and that hopefully will give her some second thoughts.
better to find out at 2 that Gus is deaf, then never to find out.
YES he never did listen. NOW he is totally awesome with the hand signs.
LIKE a whole new bully..lol
