TOLD GUS to be a STAR..you will be tired..lol HIS day at the VETS
by Pat
So Gus did very well yesterday at the vets office.
In the morning..first thing..he got a physical so they could see how deaf dogs handle them and their reactions.
Next they did several tests to see how he would respond to different situations within the clinic
at lunch off to the farm animals. to see how he would respond to animals much larger then himself. he can feel vibrations at the farm......so they wanted to take notes from that too.
In the afternoon he got an afternoon of pampering..lol. as if a bully needed that..hahhaha. a bath and a pedicure and then of course a massage. this was to see how a deaf dog reacts to pampering and fussing and mussing and handling of the dogs body. Gus the vet says was IN LOVE..lol. wander why???
HE DID GREAT the vet says and was a total doll. they love Gus there
the vet study is for deaf animals in general...as well as dogs
she says that most people might not realize their dog is deaf..........
PEOPLE have to come forth at their routine checks...so it can be checked
we talked last night about the hand signs that Gus has learned. she says he did well with them at the vets office too.
was always happy to meet new people
barked when they left him alone...HE DOES that all the time at home here too. he needs to see you and then he is fine.
the results go to the University of Guelph for study purposes. HOPEFULLY to help other deaf dogs as well as the younger deaf dog before they go into shelters. Hand signs go a long way to help the dog and simple to do. Gus is a much easier dog to handle..now they knows some of them
a few sites worth checking out from the vet is
www.deafdogs.org
www.deafanimals.org
Gus got a free bag of dogfood..
a toy to play with
a free bath and massage..
HE CAME HOME ZONKED. he slept like a log last night and even this am.
HE WILL GO BACK TO DO THIS AGAIN shortly. they want to compare the one time to another time..and see if the results are the same.
good boy Gus
DEAF DOG CAN NOT HEAR THEMSELVES..SO THEY BARK LOUDER. DEAF DOGS DO NOT KNOW NO..SO YOU NEED TO SHOW THEM WHAT IS RIGHT. DEAF DOGS ARE NO DIFFERENT AROUND CARS..ALL DOGS NEED TO BE PROTECTED AROUND CARS. A DEAF MEDICAL ALERT TAG SHOULD BE ON THE DEAF DOG OUTSIDE AT ALL TIMES.
I wish that I could have been there............but they would not get the same responses had I been.

all that pampering
not to mention..the real roast beef.....I sent that as a treat for him so he would behave..lol
and a nice bath and free massage
food and a toy
I would say it was a good day for all concerned
it is great to be able to work with a deaf dog that is easy to get along with and happy so the vet says anyhow.
You go Gus!
Sounds like Gus had a "dream date" with the vet. Glad to hear that he had so much fun! Sounds like the reasearch on deaf animals will help lots of pets and their owners. Great work!
