Frustrating tear stains out of the blue... what the heck?

I know this topic can get beaten to death, but I had to ask. Butler (16 months) has terrible rust tear stains. They just happened out of the blue last week. His eyes look kinda watery, but the stains look worse on his white face. Nothing has changed - same food (NB fish and sweet potato), same water, same treats, etc. Does this mean we have ventured into the wonderful world of outdoor allergies? Any suggestions? Benadryl? Some type of Rx? Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks.

- Jody

PS - Butler HATES creams/lotions, so putting some type of cream on his face wouldn't work. He would run around the house and rub it off on my cabinets, couches, etc. making it worse (drama king). He is somewhat ok with peroxide or other solutions, but I haven't found those to work yet.

absolutely. i am on a constant rollarcoster with food. mine were doing great on the totw but when i did the research i did what was right for us. we're now doing evo herring n salmon and one on healthwise chicken n brn rice (vs the potato). i'm assuming u wanted the link for the nzymes supplement....it is

Can you send me the link?

Water could also be the cause

But I am more inclined to believe it's the food. I am the wrong person to recommend a food. The last time I bragged about how well my dog's were doing on a food, the very next week they all got sick with diarhea and it cost me almost $400 at the Vet's. Now, it may have just been a "bad sack" but I changed food just in case.

Interesting point.... how about water filter?

Jacinda - that is an interesting point. I really hadn't even noticed a wording change on the bag (I just know it has orange coloring on it). He is about halfway through this one. I'll check into it. Any other better food recommendations?

On another note, we thought of this last night... could it be that our water filter on our fridge needs changing? We aren't tasting any difference, but I know that water can cause the stains. Maybe that could be it?

Re: I had problems with NB too

i hope that the totw you're going to try again is not the pacific stream. the ethoxyquin issue is still unresolved as to the fish supplier. imho of course why take chances. that said the food rep i was speaking with at the bully beauty contest said they were finding more and more links between potato (sweet or white) and yeast. so it could very well be a potato issue. he gave me a great link to a supplement that deals specifically with yeast.

I had not noticed it was now sweet potatoes and then salmon

Hmm makes me wonder if that is why Mason has just recently gotten yeast problems because they added more sweet potatoes in it. I'm hearing more and more people having issues with natural balance now specifically the fish and sweet potato.

The food may have changed

After all, it's now Sweet potato and fish not Fish and sweet potato.

evo

the evo is good so far. stool is firm and no digestive issues. i like the ingredients. my boy is on the healthwise (its made by the evo people) he's 7 months. i'll be switching him soon to adult. my girl had lots of orthopedic problems (she'll be 2). i'm erring on the side of caution and growing him slow, with a lower protein count. healthwise does have a chicken and oatmeal food for adults. i am also looking into
GO Natural, Salmon n Oatmeal for the boy when i switch him. he seems to do better with a lower protein not so rich food. they get a raw dinner.

What should I do... I think I changed foods too quickly

two of mine have shooting water out of their butts, and then one of them threw up their entire breakfast., That's the one with the worse diahrea

How do you like Evo & Healthwise?

Kab - how do you like these 2 foods? I hadn't heard of these brands, but I can buy some nearby. I am willing to try a switch to one of these, though it looks like the HealthWise Chicken Meal & Brown Rice is for puppies (and Butler is 16 months).

We are going to get off the potatoes just in case that is it.

Thank you -- Jody

Potatoes/sweet potatoes and yeast.....hmmmmm

That's really interesting. I too am having trouble with NB.

I was feeding potato and duck, then switched to sweet potato and fish. Still have yeast. That could explain why. That, and the change in formula. The food looks different now....definitely more sweet potato in it.

One other thing

If nothing has changed, it could be a blocked tear duct.
