final raw question.....(I hope)

Stan has been on natures variety now for about two months and about a full month with no kibble mixed. I find it is causing constipation big time. I am going to start preparing my own i found a butcher in our area that has ground bison for like $2 a pound if i buy 30 pounds. anyway i know the bone may be the culprit of the constipation so what i have been doing is using less natures variety and just adding my own meat. it has helped a little but his poop is these balls which i know it is supposed to be but they are huge and he is having trouble passing them they are just formed to big. my question is could i use cottage cheese for calcium for now until im comfortable and i can slowly add in bone to his food to see what amount causes this constipation? he loves cottage cheese but hates pumpkin so i can not add that or he will walk away.

LOL!!!

well put Cathy, as always!! LMBO...yes, I've been getting it in digest form and am just about to stop it, it's a lot to read, even just skimming through the topics - the questions are great, especially from the "newbies" like myself, but the answers are always one way and no other way, so I think it may scare a lot of people away from staying with raw - and that's so unfortunate!!

we didn't give any organs

for about the first month, to get them used to eating raw. Now we are gradually adding it in.

about

a week. i didnt try just meat with no bone yet because i didnt have any organ and felt if i gave just meat he would be missing alot of nutrients. im starting to wonder if it is the type of meat since i had him on the organic chicken nv and it was fine.

how long did you give it?

and have you tried just boneless meat?

tried that

didnt help much. also tried primal but he spit it out.

CathyandAudrey's picture

why not just use more meat

and less nature's variety? If you did notice it helping, cut way back on the nature's variety. It will save you a lot of money too.

I joined too

but stopped getting mail altogether. That mentality that there is only ONE way to feed ALL dogs grinds on my nerves. The whole dog is wolf mantra frosts my fanny too.

A friend was having a similar problem

someone told her to feed Dannon Proactive plain low fat yogurt to help loosen up stool

I've always heard use pumpkin to harden, not loosen?

I belong to that yahoo group too!

you'll get a ton of good information just ready the posts - I get it in digest form because there are a lot of posts daily....just be aware they are a hard core RAW group....and will more than likely shoot down the idea of fruits, veggies, or dairy - all most all follow the 80% protein, 10% bone & 10% organ with 5% of that being liver and 5% being another type of organ

i would use....

crushed egg shells for calicum....if he likes cottage cheese let him have some it wont hurt...if their is to much bone it will come out as a white stool... but do what you think is best....i have used bison but i use very very little as it gives my guys gas...so you might want to give it a weekend..... to see how he does....before buying a large amount...unless you like bison....
