report says "recurrent history of cystitus associated with calculi of mixed origin (urate and magnesium ammonium phosphate)" Anyone ever deal with this successfully? He started with Hills KD then switched to CD (not sure why).

they might have just formed from the urine sitting in the bladder vs being able to be expressed.
It makes a difference it it's a dog or bitch. Dogs hold a bit more urine in the bladder for marking so they dont always empty the bladder 100% but they have a longer urethra and its not as common for them to get a UTI like the girls. Some bitches squat so low they pull up bacteria like a straw and in to the bladder from the urethra. Then they have a spasm and are not able to empty the bladder 100% when the urine sits in the bladder it starts making crystals.
When a dog/bitch is diagnosed with crystals, its importain to test the urine for a UTI, if positive they should be treated for the infection and then re-tested for the crystals. Many times crystals are just from the infection and will resolve after the infection is resloved.

What your kid has is probably an infection of the urinary tract and crystals in his/her urine. The crystals are not based in the kidney that is why they changed the diet. The C/D diet is low in phosphate and magnesium (and I think protein) to keep the crystals from forming. It also tends to make the dog drink more which helps dilute the urine.

K/D is the kidney diet and C/D is the diet for bladder health. Depending on where the stones are and what type of stone they are the diets act differently.
