Eureka...found out something new today...

well its news to me anyway. If you have been reading my posts for a while and/or know me personally, you know I advocate giving pain meds to senior dogs who are showing behavior signs of arthritis and the choices of meds vary. I have been giving Rimadyl to most of my bullies when they reach 7 or 8 or during that first winter season when they are acting slow or painful to rise, squat, or climb one stairway. OK, since the weather has been very nice this past week, temps in the 70's during the daytime and the dog enjoying that, I decided to stop her daily Rimadyl for a few days to see if she 'missed it'...and she apparently has NOT. Dale is doing as well without as with, still not jumping around but definitely taking her few slow can careful steps, able to climb into and out of her Perla bed okay and so I am 'giving her a rest from medication' until I see that she shows me she needs it again.

Obviously with some meds like insulin or thyroid supplements one cannot and should not upset the body's rhythm with dropped doses but in this case, I found it very interesting (worthwhile sharing) and rather uplifting that she is doing okay on her own! BTW Dale will be 13 on March 2nd and if you want to see a photo of her, she was BOM last July or August-I've forgotten exact date. happy.gif

Yes, she has been on glucosamine/condroitin most of her life

and I give about 750mg daily. happy.gif

We did the same thing with Chester this week...

he's been on Meloxicam for his bad back and he was acting kind of poopy and drooling, just not himself. We took him off yesterday and he's like a new dog, running around and making trouble like he used to. I think we'll keep him off of it until he starts acting like his back hurts again. We just had his blood tested too, guess we could have held off on that.

Are you giving a joint supplement as well?

Maybe that is enough for Dale....Would love to hear which one you are using.

my old 15 yr old german sherperd used rimydal

for a long time, and maybe by the 2nd or 3rd yr on it- i think the vet was worried about long term use, we decided to cut back and only give to him as needed, like if we went to the park that day or if we had a party at the house or something.. it helped him and didnt have any negative effect to his liver. so maybe like 2-3 times a week instead of everyday, just in case.
