I took Bear to the vet and it turns out all the mouthing was d/t elongated soft palate. Vet gave him sone cafe (spelling?) as antibiotic and Rimadyl. I feel bad because he has been mouthing for months and I throught it was a bad habit he acquired but it turns out he probably felt sick. Vet said his palate was swollen. Does anyone have experience with this? Any advice would help. Thanks!
MY Spike
had two surgeries for the elongated soft palate. The first itme was a breeze, the second one they had to also take his sacculas, whcih are little sacs that are encased in the throat. He was pulling so hard to breath that he plled them right out of their "caves" and they couldn't go back in. He had alot of pain the second time, but recovered quickly. He has more energy now and seems alot happier.

Elongated soft palate
Elongated soft palate is very common in the bulldog. Many dogs have this and many have had the surgeries to correct it. Most bulldoggers that I know try to wait to have it corrected until the dog is a little older.

P.S. Don't feel bad. The symptoms tend to come on gradually as the pup ages, and most people think they are just part of the bulldog charm until they get really severe. You aren't a bad doggy parent or anything!

Do some searching on the internet and you will find it is..
...pretty common with brachycephalic breeds. I'd never heard of it until just last month when I'd come on the board and asked questions about symptoms Bernie had been having. He just had surgery this past Monday to correct it and is already feeling much better. I'm not an expert, but email if you have further questions!

Elongated soft palate
Very common in the bulldog and needs correction. One of mine was observed until he was almost a year old and then corrected. He breathes so much easier now and no longer rattles the walls when he snores.
