Ear Hemotoma

Hi my one older bullie had just developed one of these yesterday. I know with his previous owners he had surgery and has lots of scar tissue from them before. It is about the size of half of olive on the top part of the ear. My vet has done draining on other dogs but says that they always refill and he recommends surgery. What has worked for any of you other than surgery?? Please let me know... I appreciate it...

Also, make sure he doesn't have an ear infection

Morgan's hematoma's were caused by her shaking her head because her ear was infected. Check for ear mites too.

Thank you that is what I am thinking too.... It does feel a little warm to the touch....

Ok great I think I will give it sometime to let the body try and absorb it. It is about half of a size of a olive on top of his ear.. Poor baby

My Vet does not even do the surgery anymore

He just prescribes prednisone. The prednisone has worked great for Morgan. She's had one in each ear and you can't even tell just to look at them. I researched all the options and this was by far the best way to go for us.

Hi

Hi so what medicines did you use and how long would you say it took to go away. I would go and have the surgery but he is up in age and a rather big boy as long as he doesn't show that is hurts I would rather just wait it out.

Avoid Surgery

My boy had one and it was drained once and came back. It will go down on its own in 1 or 2 weeks. I wouldn't put him under if he is older. Hematomas are not that serious.

Have had 2 on two different dogs...

the one I had a drain put in....really simple....NO SURGERY was done, they numbed it, and put a small little plastic piece in his ear to drain it.

The other one, I had , It was really puffed up, and went down on its own with some time.

My bully just had one also and

we went to the vet and the she said there is a good possibility that it will not go away will have to have surgery. we tried meds and it eventually dried up and has never came back. the ear has a little crease in it now but nothing big

My parents 12 yr old blue heeler just had surgery on one of thes

And the vet told my folks surgery was the only thing they could do. They said draining it was only temporary fix. But there dog is doing great now. He had scratched his ear really badly and that's what caused the hematoma.

Ear Hemotoma

Hey,

I had a puppy at 12 weeks get bit by some type of bug...anyway, my vet drained it and everyday, as it would get a bit more swelled I would take a needle and drain it myself.. I did this for almost 2 weeks and it finally quit filling up.. I also would put some numbing stuff around his ear(for teething, or Lancame) before I would drain it.... cause it does hurt and of course afterwords I would give lots of hugs and treats.... anyway, he does have a tiny knot on his ear.I am sure that is scare tissue, but it lays great and you wouldn't ever know he had a problem unless you really start to feel his ear... anyway, hope this helps.. you can email me directly if you want... give the little guy a big hug and kiss from ME! hehehehe

Re: Ear Hemotoma

after loosing one during a surgery, we always drain them ourselves now. Seems bulldogs are prone to them, keep their ears as clean as you can, this prevents them rubbing and forming the hemotomas.
True, often it disfigures the ear.
Good luck!

Norbert got those

on both ears at different times. He was older and I didn't want to put him under. So we jsut left them and they do go down on their own. It can deform the ear a little. But nothing that anyone ever noticed but me. We also never drained it because they do fill up again and there is a possibility of infection when you drain them. He saw 2 different vets and both had the same advise to leave it alone.

I can't remember off the top of my head......

I can look tonight and let you know. It took about 3 weeks to fully go away I would say.
