i've read a lot of posts about giving dogs fish cephalexin for infected chin acne. i have a couple of questions before i order some: (cooper is 13 months old & weighs 56 lbs)
does it matter what brand i order?
should i order 250mg pills or 500mg pills?
is the proper dosage 500mg 3 times daily?
how many days do i give this to him? (i would assume 7-10, but not sure)
thanks for any help! i just can't get rid of those darn pimples on his chin no matter what! i keep it clean & dry (i've tried the apple cider vinegar & oxy pads). i wash his dishes daily. i think he needs a little help (like antibiotics). i had to do this once for pearl when she was a puppy so i'm familiar with it. otherwise i would definitely take him to the vet, but times are tough & we need to save where we can. thanks again!
thanks so much!
cephalexin is the generic name for this medication.
If you were purchasing this for human use, Keflex would be the trade name most often used around here...
thank you so
much for your fast response! does it matter what "brand" of fish cephalexin i order? there are so many out there & i'm not sure if one is better than the other. thanks again!
dosing
The customary dosing for generalized infection for an adult dog this size would be 500mg capsules 3xday (every 8hrs) but be aware that he could get upset stomach from this so I'd suggest you consider giving probiotics along with each dose, or start out with 1000mg daily as that may be enough...and yes, 7 to 10 days worth is needed for the medication to be "cidal" = kill off bacterial (less time can just weaken the culprit but not kill it off and this builds resistence to the medication for any future need).
