Dog's hair is turning dark

I thought my Maybull was just dirty. She is fawn and white, with an entire fawn body. About 2 months ago, her hair turned dark on both sides of her ribcage. Its about the size of a softball. She is 4 years old. Has this ever happened before to anyone? Do I need to be concerned about something? Its very odd.

That is exactly it!

That is EXACTLY what I am seeing.

Thanks for everyone's advice. We appreciate it!

This *was* seasonal alopecia...

...in one of our foster Great Danes. This picture was taken though in February, just a few weeks after the dark patches began to appear. The dark hair did fall out a little although not much. It cleared up without any intervention a month or two later when the longer days of spring came, bringing some sunshine with them!

Hope this helps.

Seasonal Flank Alopecia

My Bully Girl Winnie gets it every year. Last year it was really bad it went from her flank up and over her back evenly on both sides. It got better over the summer but didn't completely fill in. I may try the melatonin just for fun (don't think it can hurt)

Seasonal Alopecia..

This happened to Gunther too. He started getting dark on either side of the ribcage, and eventually lost the hair (a patch on each side)..His started showing up around Spring of this year...

He had his thyroid checked, he was fine. It didn't grow back until we started giving him dinovite, a supplement...

try this to help with the seasonal flank alopecia

If your Bullie is in the 45-60 pound range this dosage will work - 5-6 mg of Melatonin 2 X daily, given from September thru April. I've done this with any dog that has shown signs of SFA and it has worked for each one of them. The great thing about it is the pills are easily obtained, cheap and safe. One caveat though - if you give it to a bitch you plan to breed, it may keep her from conceiving. I learned that the hard way....

a couple of things come to mind...

seasonal alopecia is one but it seems a bit early in to be getting that. it seems to show up later in the winter of my one girl who gets it every winter.
the other is thyroid problems. i believe they have hair loss and darkening of the skin with thyroid issues. easy enought to find out with a blood test at your vets.
