Dog food for 8 year old

I am considering changing Spanky's dog food from Iams Senior dry food to one with less grain. The sales clerk at Petco recommended Nature's Recipe. Does anyone use that brand?

How about Natural Balance?

might be a good option, heard good things and you can purchase at Petco as well. Definitely a step up from Iams! happy.gif Consider a supplement for your 8 year old such as Natures Link, a powder you spread on the food, they love it and the seniors can use a little more help as they age with joints, skin, etc.

Thanks!

I will check it out!

here is the link to their website for the missing link..

Re: well you could....

I have never heard of Missing Link, but will certainly investigate it as soon as we get through this current ear infection battle.

Thanks so much!

Rae is right...great idea...Missing LINK is awesome...

great stuff
great supplement..
lots of great results on it..in all breeds..
just sprinkle on their own food..
simple and easy and you do not need to change his food then..
for now anyhow

definitely try Missing Link supplement!

helped with my bostons patchy hair loss and dandruff, she is ten now.

well you could....

keep him on the Iams if he is good on it and supplement it with a good dog supplement. Their digestive systems are so sensitive! He is such a stunning dog too!

I think you are right to wait until he is in the clear, antibiotics always comprimise their immune system

Reason I'm considering...

it is that I thought a better quality food might prevent him from getting ear infections or losing little patches of fur. He has about a dime-sized patch of fur missing on his side. The vet said if this continues to be a problem for him that she might do allergy testing. I thought we might be able to avoid that and help him be healthier by improving the quality of his food. I'm not sure I'm going to do it. I'm just considering the possibility.

yea can understand that...

the same as me fed them bulldog 24 the whole time..

there are great dogfoods that are limited ingredients though
if that was me that is what i would do if i was switching foods
keeping it simple as possible..

and then you have to do a real slow introduction of the new food
or you end up with real issues in bowels and such..
and then another 8 weeks before you see any real results in the change of food..
big decision

I am sticking with what I use here..
my dogs do well on it..
what is reason to change his food???
Spanky looks great ..that is why I am asking

Thanks Pat!

Yes, we think he is a beauty! I'll post the photo on the general site.

I'm just starting to think about this food thing. Again, I don't want to change anything until he has finished his antibiotics for his ears. I am amazed at how exotic all these dog foods are! I brought home some free samples of TOTW from the feed store this afternoon. The store manager was kinda pushing TOTW, although she also sells Natural Balance. Venison, salmon, bison, now that's eating pretty fancy! From the posts I have read as I searched through the diffrent foods on this site, it appears that TOTW may cause more problems than it helps. I'm leaning towards Natural Balance at this point. I'm going slow with this decision because I hate the thought of giving him something that might make him worse. He has been on Iams his whole life. Big decision.

wow..what a pic...

YOU really need to post that pic on the genral board for everyone to see him.
he is georgous...
really he is..
I bet more people would see him there..he is way to cute..

about the food
what about a limited ingredient type of formula for him..
since it would adjust maybe a bit better
natural balance has them
as does california natural..that is my choice of food..cause it is very simple..lamb rice and sunflower oil..
also wellness has a good one out too that lots use on the board here..

I use bulldog 24 here..lots do not like it on the board
but had great results with it here with my bulldogs
and have used it for almost 2 years..

I should have said ....

his paw has improved since he has started living with us and has the "run" of the house! (o:

Thanks...

for the recommendation. Actually, Petco is about 30 miles from our house, and I don't think PetSmart carries Natural Balance. But... I did an internet check and found a Farm Feed Store nearby that carries Natural Balance, so I'll check that out. Is there a senior version of Natural Balance? Is there a particular ingredients version you recommend?

Spanky's vet has had him taking a Rx glucosamine chewy calles Synovial-flex since we adopted him 6 mos. ago. He LOVES, LOVES, LOVES the liver flavored chewy. Would that be similar to the powder you suggested?

This is a photo of Spanky from when we first adopted him. He had been living in his crate 10 hours per day and all night and had developed a habit of licking the side of his paw. The sore on his paw is much improved now.

Thanks so much!
