Question: Anyone heard of or have gotten their dog a flu shot? I heard a vet here in town won't treat/board/or groom unless you get the dog the $40 shot....any one know if this is a good idea or not?

you may find that the dog has already had an influenza shot. There are many combo vaccines that contain the influnenza injections along with parvo, distemper, corona, lepto etc..
Check your dogs history and see ....may not need another to board.

The canine influenza shot. I just asked him about it a couple of days ago. It will not keep the dog from getting the flu but it may lessen the symptoms.

which is a virus that affects the respiratory system. The vaccine convers about 2/3 of the known strains and most boarding facilities require that the shot be no more than 6mos previous, some will accept it if its given within the last year. One important thing to note here is that KC is contagious, it spreads thru body fluids which includes saliva so you need a facility that really disinfects their dog water and food dishes, and uses a disinfectant to clean their floors daily for the best protection. and nothing I read would convince me to give the shot to my own dog. When the articles kept referring to an outbreak among greyhounds in 2005, knowing that would be where a great many dogs are kept as working animals and not family pets, housed in large but close facilities, I couldn't draw any parallel to my own situation. If your boarding facility houses a great many dogs and they have a confirmed outbreak of this flu, they may in the future require the vaccine. It seems its treated basically the same as most respiratory illnesses and good hygiene should reduce chance of spread. I personally still have doubts as to the need for this, another vaccination, with its own set of risks.

of this website, using the columns on the left under "health" there's a list of vets by state recommended by participants here and there are 5 vets for Nebraska listed. If you don't want any of these, I suggest you contact the BCA Division VI secretary (territory includes Nebraska) and ask her for any recommendations: Beverly Larrick, email: hillviewbd@aol.com

There is a new strain of canine influenza that is hitting some states pretty hard and they have come out with a new vaccination for it, according to my vet. I am familiar with this because my Emma got this influenza about 1 month ago and it almost killed her and all 5 of her puppies (they were 4 weeks old at the time) VERY SCARY FOR US. 1 week in hospital on oxygen. VERY VERY SICK. After going thru this, I would recommend the shot.

depending on which vaccines your dog has had in the past
you may find that the dog has already had an influenza shot. There are many combo vaccines that contain the influnenza injections along with parvo, distemper, corona, lepto etc..
