Does anyone know anything about mast cell neoplasia?

I just found out Clovis has it (the strange sore on her rump). My vet left a message on my voicemail, but he will not be back at his office until Thursday.

Thanks.

mast cell tumor

Hi, I have a 10 yr old Bullie that I adopted 4 yrs ago at the age of 6. Approx 1 yr or so after I had her my son found a lump on her flank area in front of her hip. My vet did a needle biopsy and found mast cells and recomended surgical removal of the mass. It was not very large, maybe the sz of a nickle. He removed the mass taking a large margin around it leaving her with an approx 6 inch linear incision/scar that healed nicely. I do not remember the grade but he reassured me that mast cell tumors usually do not re occur, at least not at the original sites. He described the tumor as a cancer that can spread rapidly if not found early on and that it spreads like "fingers" which then makes it dificult to remove. Luckily it was caught early and found in an area that it could easily be removed. She continues to be a very healthy and strong girl and I have since checked her regularly for any new lumps or bumps. This vet has been a Bullie vet for 30 + years and I am so greatfull for his knowledge and quick diagnosis and treatment. I wish you and your Bullie the best happy.gif Please keep us posted on the outcome.

Also, white dogs are more susceptible to...

mast cell tumors the same way fair skinned people are more prone to skin cancers.

Oh, that was my fault, somehow I put my new phone in silent mode

thus it did not ring when he called. He called early Tuesday morning but I did not check my voicemail until late that night.

don't know a lot about it but

I think that was a crappy thing to do to you, leave a voicemail then not be available for a few days! Don't torture yourself.

some general info

I think until you hear from your vet the "grade" or severity of the mast cell growth on your bully you can worry yourself needlessly (hopefully). There's a whole lotta info on the internet about canine mast cell tumors, notably that brachycephalic breeds are commonly affected. I recall at least one person posting within this current year about a mast cell growth on their bulldog so you might try a 'search' function here too. happy.gif
