on diuretics--question?

My Lily has been put on diuretics (lasix) to control some issues with fainting, leaking heart valve, breathing problem...this may just be the first step, tomorrow we're going for a check up...but in the meantime she is drinking a lot and peeing a lot. As expected, vet told me that. Is this going to normalize or is it something I am to get accustom to? Anyone had this experience?

I have my old gal on diuretics

only I give it in the morning so she can sleep dry overnight. I don't know the dosage for your dog...if she's getting it 2xday this won't apply. I take her out every 3-4hrs if I'm home (and I try to be but can't always) and tell her to "go make" = her usual phrase, and she pees on command! I try to get her to go before she holds it too long because I don't want the mess but I also don't want any bladder problems from urine that's too concentrated. She has access to water all the time and drinks what I think is a normal amount...pees about 4-5 times in 24hrs...a good stream...last one before my bedtime, around 11pm, and again about 8am. Sounds like you ladies have a good pattern set for your own dogs. happy.gif

she will go.....

the lasix will make it impossible for her not to go.....it removes the excessive amount of fluid thats building in the system...but i found after a month bathroom habits were normale.... i used indoor outdoor carpet easy to wash and held no ordor....good luck....

I am all prepared here...

I could not care less about accidents, I just worry she will have issues "going". She had accidents, I think "involuntarily" first night. Now I sleep with her next to the door and wake her up at night and take her out, so it gives her a chance to empty herself. But I wonder how this will be when I go to work and she has to keep it for 4-5 hours...
May get tricky for her. I have plenty of pads, waterproof things, you name it...it is just...how to convince her to GO?
I also got diapers, but I am not sure if she would be comfortable in them.

With the dogs that we had taking

Lasix, we just managed it. Their need to urinate remained pretty consistent and persistent, so we set up "pee" areas for when we were not home.

MiniMe decided that he would use one of the crates, so I moved the crate close to his chair and when he had to go, he would get up, pee and back to his chair. I just used newspaper and it worked out great for him.

Gladys and Matilda, we kept them in an open crate, x-penned an area outside the open door, used a plastic tray from a big crate, covered that in newspaper and they also did fine.

Because we knew that they were going to have "accidents" managing where they went made it much easier for them and for cleanup.

Good luck and smooches to Lily
