Last night, I caught out of the corner of my eye, Sabel stumbling in the hallway. Her back legs seemed to be slipping on the hardwood floor. As i got up to check on her she dragged herself into the bathroom. I walked into the bathroom to find her all 4 legs out laying on the floor, shaking. I thought this was it. I thought she was dying... I tried to turn her on her side and hold her and cradle her her whole body was limp and she was gasping for air. Her tongue fell out of her mouth it was blue... blue blue, her lips were white.. no oxygen, Her heart was racing. Her bowels had released. I scooped her up, held her, rocked her and cried. After what seemed like an eternity, (in reality maybe 2-3 minutes) she started blinking again, and gasping for air... she moved her front paws and took a huge deep breath. She kinda just laid there looking up at me and regained her breathing. After a few more minutes she was struggling to get out of my arms, i set her between my legs and she sat up... She eventually took a drink of water and stood up and was a little shaky but was able to walk. Of course tim was at the Penguins game, but i kept an extremely close watch over her and she was sooo tired but she wouldnt lay down or rest...just sat there. Maybe she was afraid to sleep of what might happen... i know i was afraid... by the time he came home 3 hours after the whole ordeal.. she was fine again. Chased him around the house.. snuggled with him in bed. She slept all night.
So my question is ... what the hell happened???? Was it a seizure? a stroke? We've been told she is in heart failure. She's on Lasix and we are seeing her cardiologist on friday. I dont know what happened, but i was never soo scared in my whole life
i will nm

I agree...sounds more related to heart/circulation
as I saw at least one of these episodes with my Dale about 2 days before she died. She was lying in her bed so I didn't see any stumbling nor fall, but she threw her head over the side of the bed, her front end trembled and she turned blue...I began massaging her neck/head and spoke with her and tried to gently coax her out of whatever it was, and after a very long minute, she was fine, color returned, etc. I assumed this was a sign of her eminent demise...sorry to be this blunt, but that's how I read my own situation. Maybe some other heart meds will help her to maintain longer.
has more to do with the heart.....
i have had several in heart failure....what you saw was the heart either slowed where it could not not get enough blood to the body and their was oxygen stravation....
you might want to discuss this with the vet...to see if their is anything else that could help...their are drugs that will help with blood pressure and she may need these at this time....
Ask about Vetmedin
It's a newer medicine and it's supposed to have great results.
I agree with Lori
I thought for sure seizure until you mentioned heart failure. It could be a stroke or related issues with heart failure. I wouldn't rule out seizure but the lack of oxygen makes me think problems associated with heart issues.

Re: Did Sabel have a Seizure???
I dont know but I am glad that she came around, hope her appointment goes well on friday
I'm not so sure it was a seizure.
When they lack oxygen, their lips, tongue turn blue, why I say not a seizure is when you sad she is in heart failure. Please contact your vet this morning and let them know what happened. Just my opinion.
sounds like a seizure..
i had a pug that had them here and there..and sounded just like what happened to Sabel.
the heart specialist might have some different ideas as well.
the best thing when you see it happen..it to try to comfort them till they are out of it..
My pug had one outside and I thought it was the end too...very scary. about a few hours later she was running around like nothing happened and I was shaking...due to the stress and seeing her like that.
hope you get some answer soon
and some other people on the board can sure help with this too
Sabel's Meds...
She's been on Digoxin and benazapril daily, since we rescued her 5+ yrs ago. More recently, she was put on Lasix for the fluid build up last week. We are seeing her cardiologist on friday. Our regular vet is wonderful, but this is out of her realm of specialty. In talking to her this morning, she thought it may be a seizure... but recommended seeing the cardiologist - who we already had the appt scheduled... Just keeping fingers crossed that she doesnt suffer... we will do what we can to comfortable all we can but when she starts suffering... I wont let that continue.. i will help her cross the bridge...
I also had a bully in heart failure....
I also think it sounds like it has to do with the heart failure. Calli never did turn blue but she did have a few episodes where she kind of colapsed like what you were describing Sabel did. A good medicine that Calli was on was Pemobendan(Vetmedin). If she is in fact in congestive heart failure I would ask about this medicine if the Cardiologist doesn't say anything about it which I bet they will. The medicine gave Calli more energy and she seemed to feel right much better when on it she was also on lasix and enalapril.
Re: Did Sabel have a Seizure???
I have never had bulldogs before this is my first time with them, but I did have St. Bernards before this and my female used to have seizures and what you explained is exactly what she did when she had them. The reason I say seizure is because of the bowels releasing. I have also worked with seizures in humans for many years not they are the same in animals but in my experience with both they are very similar. The racing heart, blue tongue, white lips, loss of bowels, it all points to seizure to me. Did you notice any frothing of the mouth? For sure see your vet.
