Demodex in puppy

Awhile back I asked about these red bumps on my puppy 9 mos back and belly that would pop in a few days and the dry off into scabs. Well today I went to another vet and said he has demodex they found a mite when they pluck some of his fur and saw it under a microscope. So now he is on antibiotics, capstar and I had to choose between the liquid ivermectin given orally which is cheaper but have side effects that effects the dog's behavior like he is drunk and can collapse or the interceptor which is less likely and it's in pill form. Has any one given either of this meds and which would you recommend. He needs to be in these meds for 6-8 months to be free from the mites and have to come back each month for 3 months and the skin scapings needs to be negative. Also I was told to give the meds once a day so is it okay to give half tablets twice a day since he's a puppy?

my experience...

I use the Iverm. pills for about a week and shampoo the dog every 2 days with Ketochlor for about a month. I then shampoo the dog minimum 1a month with ketochlor. Put the dog on Legacy for life's I26 for his imune system. Watch the dog for any redness and/or oily substance on hair. After 6 months then do another scraping. If negative test in another 8 months. You should be good. IF NOT
most likely your dog's imune system is compromised and will need the shampoo for life. Don't breed. Remember all dogs have it it's only when their imune system is compromised it becomes a problem.

I used the Ivermectin with no problem...

My vet started her out with a lower dose & gradually increased it to make sure she could tolerate it.

Worked fine and is much cheaper than the pills.

Get a box of Promeris Flea and Tick meds from your vet

for his weight category and treat him with one dose along his back every 2 weeks. usually only takes 3 treatments

demodex in puppy

Have you asked your vet about the flea/tick prevention Promeris. I know a lot of breeders who use it for demodex and it works wonders.

Its true, with the Mitaban dip, that the dog needs to

"drip dry" and when the medication is applied to the dog (sponge use is good, as you can put it against the fur and 'push' the liquid down to skin-level, plus it helps control that you don't get it into the eyes/mouth/ears.

As for how long a dog remains on oral treatment, usually Ivermectin or a form of heartworm medication given more than once monthly, that depends on the severity of the infestation and the dog's response to it...some have remained on Ivermectin for 3-4mos, being rechecked by the vet (skin scraping)every 3wks.

Mitaban can be used after a bath.. but the dog MUST be left to a

had mange and was on ivermectin for a few weeks but not 8 weeks. He didn't have any side effects from it at all. It is my understanding that with the dip they cannot get wet at all and it was fall and rainy when he came to my house to grace us with his presence.

He has bumps all over his back and belly

When they did the scraping there were evidence of mite and this vet is a dermatologist at UC Davis. I asked about the dip and she said they don't do that and I read some archive post that some dogs get sick from the dip. I opted for the interceptor instead of ivermectin the bumps were spreading all over his back, belly, behind the ears and between his toes were all red and it will be for 8-12weeks treatment. The antibiotics and capstar those 2 meds he will be on longer.

Just one mite??? All dogs have these mites it is only when they

control that they have Demodectic Mange. Does this vet have a good knowledge of Bulldogs or is yours one of the only ones he/she sees. If they found numerous mites then OK it is mange but 1 mite??? Also if this dog has mange I would rather dip my dog in Mitaban every 2 - 3 weeks for 2 mo. that give ivermectin daily for 8 mo. Both are poison and I would rather put it on the outside than ingest it.
