he is doing well in the recovery of his elongated palate and they removed some saccules, one that was wrapped around is vocal cords. The nurse said when he was out of icu and back to his kennel, they walked past the visiting room that I was in to see him, he looked at it thinking i'm inside. Only when he's in pain does he think of his mommy. He is on 24 hrs respiratory watch and I'm waiting for a call back around 930am today to see how he's doing.
I have a question, the vet said he has to be on a special diet, low fat Royal Canine that he's been eating now, it's a can food. I don't really like this brand and it was part of a long list of recalls in 2007. Are there any other low fat vet prescribed or other better brand than this? Please advise so I can ask the vet as he cannot eat dry kibbles even if I soak it. They want to feed him the can food so his stomach can easily digest it.

you might get a better response.. but .... as far as low fat food goes.. might not be a good idea with everything else in this poor guys life to change foods on top of it right now maybe once he is feeling better ..do it.. for now I would just go with the one that he is on moist...and change at a later date.. but that is just my thoughts

Yeah, I hear you. The girls were hand feeding Q when he had to stay. He thinks they're all wonderful! lol Glad to hear BooBoo had a comfy weekend and is not stressing. Good thoughts for the endoscopy - I'll check back later for your update.

he was happy to see me wiggly his butt and then wanted me to hold him and we played ball for a few minutes then he wanted to go find his nurse. He would stand at the door that connected to the nurses lobby and bark. I guess he's getting all the attention so many hrs in the day that he is so spoiled. He did not regurgitate on Sunday morning and I'm waiting to hear updates for today Monday and his endoscope procedure will be in the afternoon and straight to surgery if need to. I don't think he will be home for Thanksgiving if he needs the surgery and I'm sure the little booger won't mind staying there either. I have to admit UC Davis takes really good care of him compared to any of the other vets, they keep me updated 2x a day morning and evening and when i came to visit him, he's clean and well cared for which really gives me peace of mind to know he is well cared for. Will keep you updated after the procedure.

My vet explained that an elongated palate was like sticking a finger into the back of your throat. It stimulates the gag reflex. Maybe with the palate resection, and something like elevated food and water bowls, he won't have an issue with a weakened sphincter? Anyway, fingers, toes, and eyes crossed!

I feel your pain. I guess we do what needs to be done to make our kids comfy and happy. I call Q my million dollar dog. He's actually very *healthy*, and I still had to drop over $6000 on him this year for emergency surgeries. Sigh. Good thing they're so darn cute, huh? Good thoughts for BooBoo!

the vet said he didn't see any sign of hernia but did notice that the spinchter from the esophagus is weak and is not completely closed and that his palate is very long. He said there is a 10-20% chance that he would have a hernia, but recommend that I do the palate surgery and continue the medication for the inflammation to make the sphincter stronger and see how it goes, if he throws up again, then they would do the surgery. but said there is no surgery to fix the sphincter just to to make the stomach acid from shooting up to the esophagus. he's going to be in the ICU tonight and they will monitor him. They are using the scapel to cut his palate instead of laser, there was no options for this. Will know more later in the evening.

those bills comes to $1580. it just makes me mad that the 3 vets i went to did not pick up when i said he vomit projectile that it is called regurgitation and it has something to do with his esophagus, not him being sick and insists i do the xrays and ultrasound when i had insisted for a barium xray. he's into the endoscope now and will know more in the evening or when he is out for recovery and depending if they have to do the fundoplication then he will be in ICU.

the vet called and said that the surgeon say that with this breed, his airways might be compromised and therefore when he tries to breathe and suck in air, it moves his stomach uptowards his esophagus and creating a hernia. So if the endoscope do not pick up a hernia then it may be the cause of his palate and saccules so they will check that too and do surgery if need to. Estimate for all this totals $4500. He will go under anesthesia 1245pm today.

Good news so far...and
I expect your bill will cost you a Second Mortgage on your home!
That may actually fix the problem
