constant licking lips/cannot settle down

I took the mister to the park where he pushed his toy around in the snow. Not for long, maybe 15 min, but he played vigorously. He came home and is now CONSTANTLY licking his lips and not settling down. I am on my way out the door to work.I am having a fit that I have to leave him. I wonder if he is bloating. He ate 3 small cookies when we got in, hasn`t eaten a meal for 5 hours. His face is sore from the snow. Could that be it? Pain. His toes are also sore. I cleaned his face and toes. I am coming home on my break to check him. I am having a fit. I can check BDW from work.
I do know the signs of bloat and am always cautious not to exercise him after eating.
Thanks, Deborah

going to the vet in 1 hour

I won`t be brushing his teeth for a few days...

I have been more diligent lately with teeth brushing, trying to postpone yet another anaesthetic. Yikes! That would really hurt to have a toothbrush on his very raw gums.

Glad to hear its something that time and TLC can fix.

Good to hear, but still it sucks, huh!

Now you have me looking at our guys Ferret balls, as they have one that they love to share and wrestle with.(We have 4 Bulldogs, have been in Bulldogs for just over 5 years). I had one of our guys get a small cut on his gum, we used baby orajel to relieve the constant licking. He still drooled, probably more than without the numbing, but didnt constantly irritate it with licking, and pawing. Thanks again for the update. Dang Bullies, gonna put us all in the poor-house! But I wouldnt have it any other way!

yea vet bills do add up...

maybe try the excersise ball outside for your bulldog and see
the one with the rope on the end looks good to me too
I do not have heavy chewers though.
not one of them..
the teaser ball has a few bite marks..
but that is now away for the winter after your post too
the other ones should be fine.if they do fill up with snow for the winter for Bella.

mrhig2004's picture

yes, me too

that toy is being put away for the winter. He has the jolly ball with the handle (he is on his third one) but being a heavy chewer the handle is off in no time and he chews holes in it. My fear is always that he will chew off a piece of plastic and that will be another 5 grand at the vet!
BTW I came home with beautiful Christmas presents from my vet. A huge gift basket as always, 2 bottles wine, cheese, crackers, truffles, more chocolate, tinned nuts, liqueur cake, etc. Then another one wrapped from him I have not opened yet. He said it is a beautiful coffee table book with the most gorgeous animal pictures.
He is very grateful my first bully paid off his Mercedes and now Mr. Higgins has paid off his house!!

I can for sure see that happening..did here too......

Bella loves her ball too.the teaser but it fills up with snow all the time. she is totally obsessed with it..
so now what I got was a jolly ball on a rope..so that it does fill up with snow and a jolly ball with a handle that does fill up either.
had to order them and do not get them till friday
i think that the idea will work for Bella though
those balls really freeze outside
good for summer..but not for the winter..
glad you took him to the vet to find out

another girl on the website here uses a human excersise ball in the snow ..it looked great too.
I also got one of them for Bella too
she loves to be oustide playing
so had to come up with some idea
since the ball in the ball does not work for winter play

back from the vet, here was his problem..

he had played in the snow with his Jolly Teaser Ball, the hard one with the holes and a small ball inside. It was well used and had teeth marks all over it, kind of causing a sandpaper surface. He had played soccer with himself in the snow on a long line. It had been filling up with snow, but the heaviness did not stop him from picking it up and running around with it.He does this in the summer, without snow of course. The inside of his lower lip and gum, right down to the bottom of his gum was totally raw. It looks terrible. Vet said it was not frostbite, but the roughness of the toy and him wedging it in his mouth, heavy with snow caused a terrible contusion/abrasion in the lower gum and all around it. Vet said the fact that he drooled excessively for 9 hours meant he was in very bad pain, and showing it. If a bully shows that much pain, they REALLY are in pain, as we know.
He seems fine today, having slept well all night. I love good vet. I had called him and he wanted to see him right away.
Many thanks for those who responded to my posts. I was crazy with worry having to go to work and knowing he was in pain, not knowing why. I am taking today off to hug him all day.

any update??

what did the vet have to say??

it`s o.k

I too can get up on my pedestal. I think it is for the love of the breed, we want nothing but the best for them, because they deserve it and sometimes they are not in the best of hands.
I just got home from work, he has soaked his crate pad (drooling and licking his mouth) He appears to be settling now so I will get up early with him in the a.m and see how he is. I think I will have him sleep with me so I can wake up if he needs me. Not anything I would not do for him, and I am sure you are the same.
I am calling my vet clinic in the morning. Your idea of frostbite on the face had me wondering. Thanks for that idea.

Re: I am not new to bulldogs

Sorry again, to ruffle the feathers. Its just that recently I have witnesses quite a few bulldoggers jumping on the internet(not just BDW) to work out vet issues with their dogs. In 3 of these cases, the outcome was death, one of which the loss of 2 puppies. The majority of them were new to bulldogs, and should have had the breeder, who sold them the dog, or a mentor, to call at a moments notice, to help. I hope you find out what gives with your guy, as it sounds like a pain or tummy issue. I do apologize again, as I can be a bit of an a**, as Im sure we all can be, when it comes to this breed.

I am not new to bulldogs

I believe that there are many times we do not necessarily have to run to the vet. I know about bloat, which is why I was having a fit. If he were more symptomatic, I would have had him at the emerg clinic immediately. He comes before the hospital and I would risk my job to help him.I needed advice and got it. It was a Sunday, I was on my way out the door to the hospital. I have been in bulldogs for 13 years now and he is not my first bully. This forum has helped many bulldoggers with health issues, including myself. I have never NOT taken my boy to my (very bully experienced) vet when indicated.

Frost bite on the face...

also known as Chillbane. He may have a very sore face/muzzle. A couple things not to do:
Dont give him anything for an undiagnosed condition.(ie: pepcid, rimydil, benedryl)
Dont wait if you ever remotely suspect a bloat. As stated before, you only have an hour and a half, if that were the case.
Dont substitute internet vets for real thing. If it is something, it needs to be confirmed and treated.

Things to do:
Call your vet.
Set an appointment.
Let us know what it was.

Sorry if I seem abit hard a^^ed, but after having seen some of the stories lately, and the apparent shotgun solutions, it tends to rub on me abit, that most of our conditions, when seen by a competent Bulldog vet, can be easily diagnosed and treated, thus ending the Bulldogs suffering. People, for whatever reason, have to come to the net, to get an answer, when what they need to do is call a vet.

could his nose be chapped?

All that cold snow. Could his nose be sore from the cold snow? Maybe a little bag balm or aquaphor on his nose.

soaking wet

the towels under him on the couch were soaking wet, not urine. This is how much drooling/licking he has been doing. I know the drooling is pain. Poor guy.

what dose of tagamet/pepcid? (44lb)

yes, he is very small. I would die if anything happened to him.

mrhig2004's picture

I brushed his teeth today

and I know he did not chew a branch. I don`t let him. I watch his every move. (only because he is so cute)
I am just now starting to lose that panic mode.
Thank you so much.

You might want to check his teeth

if he chewed on the tree, he may have a splinter between his teeth or in the roof of his mouth.

I am at home now

He was awake when I got here, on the couch, but drooling a bit and still licking his lips. I measured his belly, but it does not look distended. He is walking o.k. I don`t have any pepcid or anything like that but will get some on the way home from work. I think he has pain, I agree. My worst fear now is it is one of his knees. Although he is not limping. He ran around, but is allowed to as per my vet.
He is the boy with 2 patella surgeries, then patella removal 2 summers ago. The other knee has the pins migrated out of the joint and embedded in the tissue. Maybe I will not let him run that hard again. He loves to play and totally loves the snow.He ate some today.
Oh good, he went into his crate and is settling to sleep.
Thank you, thank you, so much. Going back to work now.
Deborah

If its a true BLOAT, he's be dead in 1.5hrs....

so it sounds like he has a belly ache with some nausea...I say nausea because of him licking his lips. I'd give a Pepcid AC or Tagamet to settle down his stomach, no food and only small amounts of water at one time. Better to be be hungry than to be sick and vomiting, IMHO. When he shows signs of feeling better (relaxed behavior, no licking or pacing, etc. then I would give breakfast in the morning.

try posting this on the general board..you might get a faster re

I am sorry I am no help to you in this circumstance
but someone on the general board might reply faster..
just say something on the general board that you need help ASAP
and refer to the this thread on the medical board
HOPE SOMEONE has some answers for you as soon as possible.

do you think he is bloating?????

please read my post above. I am at work now, I am a nurse, cannot leave my shift but am going to check on him in 1 1/2 hrs. If he is looking bad, I will take him to emerg and the hospital will hsve to make do without me.
Thanks very much,
Deborah and Mr. Higgins
